Similar to the tip about the cable placement on audio/video gear pic, when I take something apart to (hopefully) try to fix it, I'll take some pics as I go along so I can (hopefully) put the gizmo back together.

A couple of years ago I had some plumbing work done and I took pics when the wall was open. Then during some later remodel work, the pics came in handy for the contractor to understand how the shower pipe was connected. Saved some sheetrock demo expense.

I could see this tip being useful out hiking where you run into multiple trailheads.

I work with my feet propped up on my desk, and am currently using a recliner for an office chair. It does need wheels (although I put wheels on the desk and that helps).

A nice feature of wing chairs is that they are warm, so you can turn the heat down a bit and still avoid drafts.

@crayfish, we slept on a Tempurpedic for 5 weeks house-sitting back in the summer and crashed at another friend's house in early fall, and spent ~3 weeks on her Tempurpedic off and on. We really enjoyed sleeping on them.

When we finally settled down a month ago, we got a Sleep Innovations foam mattress on sale from Amazon. So far so good (but my wife did track down a mattress cover to "cool" it down). It's still early days but I think it's as comfy as my friend's Tempurpedic, for a lot less money. Plus it's made in the US. And the outgassing wasn't bad at all.

I'm pretty sure this is the same company that makes foam beds for Costco. For the price, we figured we could dump it in our empty guest room, but it's working out well for us too.

Boo - what's the fun of having pets if you don't enjoy living with them? I just wipe my stuff down with one of those lint brushes now and then. Brushing out the cats helps a little too.

Most pulls can be fixed with a blunt needle and some patience - check out the vids on fixing sweater pulls for suggestions.

I purchased an old house a few weeks ago and a model of the house came with it. I suspect it was made by one of the 5 kids who grew up in the house sometime in the 40's or 50's.

It's not as detailed as the 1930's house, but was still neat enough to move it from the basement to the entry foyer.

I like to call older neighborood houses "vernacular" homes. Covers all the bases without having to narrow anything down.

I think a wide, narrow deck from foundation vent to foundation vent would pop out the front a bit more and put less emphasis on the garage. And it would lessen the funnel effect I see heading for the front door. It could detune the gas meter too, if you decide against foundation plantings. But the plantings had a similar effect before, so that could work again.

And I like wrought iron, but I think wood for the deck and front door would work a bit better.

But you didn't ask about all that stuff, and it's hard to really tell how good the house looks in a couple of pictures, so forget I said anything. And I understand completely about the tree, and I like the painted brick. :-)

I love casters too. Harbor Freight is a good place to get them on sale for cheap. Among other items, my MALM bed is on casters and it gets repositioned frequently.

I have a valley view with mountains in the distance and full sun thanks to a southern exposure and lots of windows.

But seeing many of the houses in AT, like these, make me depressed a bit. :-)

The Frye is a great museum. And it's free too. Even has some free parking.

I must have missed the past stories, but I saw a link on Green Car Advisor this morning highlighting the Ecodomo floor and wall leather tiles made from scraps left over from BMW leather upholstery. Looks nice.

Plus, they're keeping 100 tons of scrap leather out the landfills every year.

I have gourds all over. It was a lousy summer for growing more with a cool Spring; 5 plants only yielded two gourds.

The larger "birdhouse" gourds clean up nicely and you can "tone" them easily with a dab of stain or shoe polish. Mostly I just remove the outer layer with the back of a dull paring knife and that burnishes them nicely.

I never can figure out how to lounge on a couch without bolstered arms. I manage ok in a bed, but when I lay out on a couch, I need the "headboard" effect of arms.

Most of those pillows look uncomfortable. I hate sitting at a dining room table with not enough room between my knees and the table, and some of these pillows would add way too much height. And they slide around. Flat ones can be ok, but poofy ones - no thanks.

I'm also not fond of reading blog comments with gratuitous spam stuck in them, modernnests.

Is there a real stream down there? It looks "constructed".

The trend around here is to daylight and rehab streams; I wouldn't think much of the idea of building a "Fallingwater" house over a creek. The Corps of Engineers may care, but probably not in the land of the L.A. River.

Glass floors? Sure - how about a light tube going into the box and making it a big terrarium?

I grew up in a corner house that, until I became a teen and we moved, had vacant lots on either side.

Lots of corner lots seem to have large "exposed" yards, but little in the way of roomy back yards. I prefer to have less front yard and more back yard.

So, for a single family dwelling my preference would be for an "interior" lot. The posts about condos and apartments are well taken though.
