I made these Bacon and Avocado Sandwiches the other day and they were really delicious (I couldn't find radish sprouts, so used alfalfa): http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Bacon-and-Avocado-Sandwiches-109315 15 Marvelous Meals With Beautiful Bacon |

jenpdx, my problem with it is all the pressure that people seem to put on themselves and others to "do Valentine's Day right" and "make it special." A lot of people seem to view it almost as a test of their significant others. Then you have the jacked-up prices on flowers, the SUPER-TACKY crap in the stores, overcrowded restaurants . . . my honey and I just prefer to skip all the hype. Happy Valentine's Day! What actually annoys the most is people who inform me that I MUST text because it's convenient for THEM. "Come on people, get on board," as it was put in a comment above. Nope. If you want me to text you can pay for it. Don't tell me how to communicate. When Not to Leave a Voicemail |

I agree with the person above that said that soft textures are sexy. I totally swoon for thick, super-soft flannel sheets and have sold my SO on them as well. We have soft fleece blankets for the not-so-cold times of year and a cuddly fleece comforter cover (bright red!) for the winter. And we have a quilt in warm colors hanging over the head of the bed. All those soft textures just make you want to burrow in and cuddle. Ten Tips for The Sexiest Bedroom... Like Ever (And also for finding love) |

Yep, Tim, they just LOVE the gender stereotypes here, don't they? I guess I'm not a real woman because I have no desire to visit Pinterest, and my boyfriend isn't a real man because he actually knows me well enough to have some ideas of his own about what gifts I might like. WAY too many cookies, chips, and other treats around here lately, and we're both suffering from a bad case of February Fatness. Time to get back to the healthy--and delicious--eating. Tomorrow, I'm going to make some curried roasted cauliflower, chicken cooked with a Stonewall sauce, and brown rice. I think Sunday I'll make some Greek meatballs to have with pitas, tzatziki, and veg. Definitely going to try to get as much veg in as possible. What's Cooking This Weekend? Yeah, you just buy one of those pour-over things (got mine in the grocery store) and you can easily and quickly make a cup at a time. I keep one at work and make myself a cup every afternoon using water from the electric kettle. $51 Per Pound: The Deceptive Cost of Single-Serve Coffee The New York Times |

I definitely do this. My partner eats WAY too much junk food, so when he does eat at home, I'm always trying to maximize the nutrition he gets. My favorite trick is to make meatballs with super-lean beef and replace part of the meat with finely chopped mushrooms--better nutrition, fewer calories, more moisture in the meat, and cheaper. He loves Shepherd's Pie, so I top it with Colcannon or half mashed potato/half mashed cauliflower rather than the usual spuds. Are You a Vegetable Hider? |

Love this whole grain bread recipe: http://chickensintheroad.com/cooking/whole-grain-grandmother-bread-how-to-make-bagels/print/. Just knead the dough in the mixer for 5 or 10 minutes or until it's smooth and elastic, as bakers always say. What Are Great Recipes for Stand Mixers? Recipe Questions |

I might try this. Right now I use Seventh Generation TP because everything else I've tried gives me a rash in an area where you really don't want a rash. It's not great--it's thin, a bit rough, and is pretty expensive--so I wouldn't mind switching if I can find something else that works for me. Color doesn't matter to me, I just don't want to itch! My boyfriend and I generally agree on decorating, but the big difference is that he likes a lot more stuff on the walls than I do. To me, it gets a bit cluttered, but that's okay because I have my sewing room/office that I can retreat to. I also get the sense that it's really important to him to make this house a home. The house that he bought with his ex (and sold to buy this one) was a fixer-upper that they had all kinds of plans for, but somehow it never got fixed up; it was a place they lived, but never really a home. So it's important to him to put his stamp on this house and make it ours (and he never puts anything up without consulting me). When Tastes Merge: One Home, One Too Many Opinions |

On Saturday, we had our usual Full English Breakfast, then for dinner I made Meatball Sandwiches (part of my evil plan to fill the boyfriend full of veg--I replace half the meat with chopped shrooms and fill the sauce with all kinds of other veg). Today I made banana bread with some leftover mini chocolate chips, tried a recipe for pizza bianca from Serious Eats, and made bacon and avocado sandwiches for lunch (new recipe from Epicurious and really enjoyed it). I thawed T-bones for a dinner at my mother's that got cancelled, so now we're going to be eating steak for three days; not a calamity, but not exactly the veg-heavy meals I had in mind. Maybe I'll slice it and serve it on a salad. :) What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of January 26-27, 2012 |

kbizzle, we have a solar tunnel in our kitchen and I don't feel any heat from it at all. It's a nice thing to have and adds some extra light in the kitchen, but I don't know that I'd pay to put one in (ours was put in by the previous owner). I think it's meant to replace a window in the kitchen, but it really functions more like an overhead light fixture than a window, since you don't get the view or sense of openness that you get with a window. My boyfriend and I spent 3 weeks in Europe a couple of years ago and only brought one bag to check (we each had a small carry-on as well); we could have done it with less, but I have super-sensitive skin and have to bring things like toilet paper with me when I travel, as there's only one brand I know of that I can use. Rian, one of my cats is a big-time plant eater (to the extent that he's learned what the CSA box means and goes bananas when he sees it until I give him some of whatever leaves are in there--lettuce, spinach, basil, whatever) and when I buy flowers, I keep them on top of the fridge, one of the few places he can't get to. Another trick I've tried is to keep them in the fridge when I'm not home, then just take them out and put them on the counter when I get home; problem with that is that you have to be super-vigilant while you're home, which is pretty hard to maintain. One thing I used to do when I had better plant-growing conditions is to buy (cat safe) plants that have fuzzy leaves, since cats seem to hate those; if the plant flowers, they may still eat the flowers, though. We're always talking about simplicity in the context of our homes--only keep things in our homes that are beautiful and useful. But maybe that idea should be extended to our lives, too; that we should only do things, go places, see people that make us healthier, happier people and get rid of everything else that clutters up and sickens our bodies and our lives. It's been a hard week here--my father died Tuesday--so I've been cooking a lot to comfort myself. Made a couple of different pastas, then pepperoni/sausage/mozz/ricotta rolls so we can carb up. Tonight for dinner I'm making Indian food: butter chicken, roasted curried cauliflower, and brown rice. Also made shortbread with miniature chocolate chips, which is already gone. :) Tomorrow, I think I might make some of my favorite pizza: whole wheat crust, pesto, tomatoes, and shrooms. Just got home after a pretty harrowing drive from work--several inches of snow, plus ice pellets, plus freezing rain. If you don't have the luxury of staying home when it's nasty out, don't forget all the stuff for your car: scraper, snow broom, spray deicer (I don't use it unless the freezing rain is bad, as it's the only thing that works then), kitty litter for traction, jumper cables, NASA blanket, Fix-a-Flat, deicing windshield washer fluid, etc. Plus a shovel and salt or sand for your front stoop or walk.
