I've had cornish rock chickens for about 10 years (2001-2011) and I hope that maybe I can have some layers in the future. One thing we learned from our experience is that it is super important to test for coccidia, which can be potentially fatal if left unchecked. We started our farm unknowing that the coccidia was already in the soil. Some chickens and fowl can be carriers without symptoms for quite a long time, however if a dog were to consume the feces of an infected bird (and we all know they'll try) that dog can become infected.
