Thank you for the tips Nancy - it's interesting that you mention the visa deal, I am about midway through a BA in English at the moment and I knew you needed it to get a work visa, however, while I live in America and I'm a citizen here I also have British citizenship through my father. I had no idea that affected the visa!

Thank you again for both the beautiful story you wrote and the tips!

Hello Nancy - I'm glad I stumbled upon this post or I never would have found your blog!
It surprises me to hear about the tradition of fried chicken and cake in Japan but I suppose it shouldn't, I've heard about how important New Years is there and the beautiful dishes that are served.

I would like to say though that this post had some unexpected inspiration for me. I've had a very long love of Japan and its culture (spawned by my father who does business there) and I taught myself Japanese three years ago at seventeen hoping that someday I might be able to find a path that would lead me there. My original plan was teaching English but cooking, baking and food in general is my true love. I thought I could never find a way to make it there on my love of food alone or even find a way to balance the two.

Reading about how you have incorporated food from your farm and also teach on the side gives me hope that I might find some way to incorporate both as well!

Wonderful post again! It was lovely reading about how you have made your own traditions and used some bumps in the road to your advantage.

To Rucy -

That is wonderful! I commend you and your family for keeping that tradition for so very long.

Although my father moved here from Britain forty years ago and my mother had a very deep southern history, we moved so often that

I don't think a tradition could really take hold (if there is one) in our own branch of the family.
We are now, at least partially settled, so perhaps I'll just have to kickstart one up.

This is too cool! I am, unfortunately, a chronic latte buyer... up to four a day (shh)... So this would make a huge dent in my payout! Love the colour too, it's funky in a good way.
