My mother found two Wegner wishbone chairs (the real deal) at a Salvation Army for $10 each. My best finds have come from estate sales, but I have found a number of pieces of industrial steel furniture curbside.

How do you set up alerts for craigslist? I'm looking for lounge chairs on craigslist now, and have found that I need to search under every possible misspelling to see all available products. It's depressing to discover the number of ways that one can (mis)spell ottoman.

I agree with everyone - an inspector is key, but it's also wise to bring in the experts, and many will give you an estimate for repairs for free. A basement excavator saved us from buying a house that needed three new basement walls, which would have cost more than $30k. One other thing to think about are the trees on your property. I love the towering trees surrounding our house, but I wish I'd known that they were almost all totally neglected and would require $2-3,000 of work by an arborist. This may be apparent when you're looking at a house in the summer, but an experienced arborist can tell you what's what in the middle of winter.

I like it, but my favorite element was there before - the tiled columns, which beat the ugly gray ones that are in my basement. I agree with a previous comment about water in basements and ruining the pretty furniture and lovely rugs. I like my basement unfinished, because even though we spent a fortune on grading, drainage and watertight windows, it could still get wet in a heavy mid-western rain or thaw.

nothing is more true than rule #1. I love returning home to a clean house. I got home from a work trip at 2am last night, and was so comforted that my house was tidy when I walked in.

I second St. Vincent de Paul - they will pick up, and have wonderful people working for them and do great work in the community.

Alphaville has good knock-offs for good prices. Maybe a little higher than $100 per, but close. http://www.alphavilledirect.com/index.html

You might also want to ask your local consignment store to keep their eye out for what you're looking for, or try to visit estate sales.

We're renovating the interior of our mid-century ranch this year, and are starting on the exterior next year. While I think we might be stuck with our asphalt driveway, this is a fantastic alternative to our current brick walk, which is hideous. My only concern is that the brick walk is already terribly uneven from rodents (mostly chipmunks) burrowing around underneath it. Do you think this would fare any better?

we just finished putting two coats of primer and two coats of pumice benjamin moore paint on formerly blood red walls in a tiny bedroom that only has one tiny window and no overhead light. It's not a meth lab, but I am shocked at the color choices that the previous owners made - teal in the living room, the blood room, a GOLD hallway, a bedroom with four different colors of blue, and a marigold kitchen.

We are in the process of moving from our 8th rental in 10 years into the first place we've ever bought. We've lived in this rental for only 9 months and I kept the boxes - throughout the entire packing process we've been so thankful that we did. For our last cross-country move we spent weeks driving around LA to different box cast-offs (craigslist) and sorting through boxes that were too damaged to be re-used. This will be the third move for a lot of these boxes and we've had to deal with a ton of spiders, but it has made the move so much easier.

The first thing I do when I move in is change the light switch plates. I have a collection of funky light switch plates that instantly make it feel like home. In our last rental we couldn't change anything, and even though it was a pretty great place I hated the saloon style ceiling fan in our dining nook.
