Forgot to add that the only place that I've encounter that comes close to matching FL in 'pests' was Australia. Pretty much any 'pest' there will kill you. :-)

Rattle snakes, water moccasins, palmetto bugs, roaches, banana and black widow spiders (both poisonous), hairy giant tarantula-looking spiders (not sure what they are called but they are horrifying--especially in the shower with you), ginormous fire ants, both regular and red ants, locusts, black snakes, bees, wasps, beetles, snapping turtles, alligators, Portugese man-o-war, jellyfish = the joys of growing up a Floridian. Personally I love the lizards b/c they eat the insects. The worst is going out to your car in the morning and seeing an alligator parked next to it--then having to call & wait for Fish & Wildlife to haul it away.

I moved to NYC to get away from it all. Needless to say, however, a giant waterbug (aka Palmetto bug b/c they look the same to me) still sends me screaming in panic and disgust. Ewwww...

Warm yellowish color. I like Benjamin Moore Straw (it looks more taupey on the color swatch but on my wall looks like a summery yellow).

I used this in my living room against a brick wall (not the greatest looking brick, but I've tried cleaning & sealing it to no avail). The yellow is much warmer & cozy than the original linen white. Photo here:

These look like the IKEA mirror tiles. I've been wondering what to do with these that I inherited from a roommate. I like the chic simplicity of the silver writing on the tiles but would love to see a bigger picture of the wall to have an overall idea of how the mirroring looks in the room.

I love the color and 'flow' of the blue tiles as well as the the wood tones. I do have to admit though that I am not a fan of the square white tiles on the wall.

I definitely wouldn't want to come home (and cross the bridge) to that pool-bed after a night of heavy drinking...that's bad feng shui! :)

A fan, iTunes or TV playing softly in the background, Midtown-NYC street noise below and sometimes helicopters circling overhead (I am on top of 5th FL walk-up). I've always slept with a radio but now I've grown completely accustomed to the noise and can't sleep in silence. When I visit my parents (who live in the middle of nowhere), I have to have music or TV playing otherwise the silence drives me crazy.

I live in on the top (5th) floor of a walk-up in Hell's Kitchen - the door is always locked - heavy duty bolt lock, dead bolt and chain. Three months ago, my neighbors across the hall left their window gate unlocked (window to the fire escape) and were burglarized. The burglar walked out the front door of the apartment and out the front of the bldg (according to the police who came knocking at 11:30pm to see if my apt was ok).

Most Europeans make their bed this way, with twin duvets. And, of course, the square pillow. :) Also, I've found that a box spring/mattress combo seems to be mainly an American concept.

I love the glow of candles in the window. In Germany, people illuminate wood-carved scenes in their windows with electric candlelight. I bought two while I lived there and when I returned to the U.S., adapted the plugs and put them in my window.

While I like brick, in this case, I would paint that brick white. I like the idea of beefing up the mantle--maybe some pale re-claimed wood. You could hang a picture or mirror. I would also get rid of the gold surround - very dated. Go for something black (iron looking--spray paint it flat black if nothing else). Not crazy about the light on the wall. Angle that chair more towards the fireplace and put a floor lamp either behind or beside it. A fluffy rug and a small footstool would help. Extend th tiles on the floor to go wall to wall. Add some iron fire-places "tools" and some pieces of wood.

Great redo! Although not a fan of the tile floor. I think the wood floor should have been continued into the kitchen. Love the chandelier, backsplash and simplicity of design. If only my NYC kitchen were this nice!

Hell's Kitchen, NYC: I walk everywhere (incl. to work) but the E/C/1 subway stops are within a block, if I want. Around the corner from my apartment is restaurant row--blocks of diverse eateries, so if I want Thai food at 2 AM--they deliver. 24 hour grocery stores or bodegas abound. I am within 8 short streets of Central Park, 3 avenues of the West Side Highway path for biking/running/rollerblading or the boathouse for free kayaking (summer) in the Hudson River. Also within close proximity to Theater District and Lincoln Center. Lots of people, young vibe but still very much a neighborhood feel (lots of brownstones).

Your own place is the best showroom. Start there and invite over friends. If they like it, they might start asking for your advice/help. For me, that was the impetus to begin classes (starting with the basic intro to int. design). If you can, look into continuing education courses at night (or whenever you can fit 1-2 in your schedule). They are less expensive, you don't need to do them as credit unless you want to. This way you can explore your options at your leisure until you decide you want to seriously pursue a degree/career. Even without formal classes, reading on your own and all the HGTV/DYI TV offer great ideas to develop into your own. A job in the field is great as well, even if it as an assistant to a designer. I had the opportunity to work for a high-end renovation company in NYC and it was amazing working with designers, architects, engineers, and even artists.

I find the bathroom a little too 'hospital chic'. The overall light and airiness in the apt seems great from these pictures. Do love the kitchen table and tin ceiling.

Installing my A/C unit in my window (5th FL apt) as well as changing out an old kitchen light fixture with a new one. Yay for single girl power!

I love this! As a NYC dweller, I've had 5 different roommates since I moved here and dealt with all of these issues at one point or another--it is NOT being picky. Certain bathroom etiquette is a given when sharing space with anyone, but esp. not having to pick your roommate's hair out of the drain, changing the TP if there's only 1 piece of paper left and, my biggest--flush the toilet. Seriously. The sharing issue of cleaning the bathroom is also a biggie--I end up doing it most of the time b/c otherwise it won't get done.

I long for the day when I can have my own place.

It would be a bit more hot a) painted or stained; and b) if the drawers somehow slid out (rather than sideways) so you could place this in a corner to save some space. Then it would be aesthetic and functional.

Yes! I started streaming video online when I moved to the Czech Republic in 2006 and haven't looked at a TV since (in my own place anyway). Most shows are available online (with lovely *limited* commercials) so why cram something else into my already cramped Manhattan abode (basically a 1 bedroom share, i.e., we have no living room). Space matters more than a TV and my Mac laptop "does it all"--from wherever there is a wireless signal. Now, if only all streaming content could be as great as Hulu.com's user-friendly site!
