I've found that keeping used batteries in plastic bags causes them to leak faster.

I used to spend upwards of $90 for sheets until I discovered those Ikea ones are really not bad! And I don't have $90 to spend on sheets anymore.

Does anyone else have a black cat who absolutely hates white? My cat will attack anything white at night, including my shirts, and only sleeps on a black blanket at the end of the bed.

This is the scariest thing I've ever seen done to a toy.

@Brooklynnina actually that's not dust, it's the waxy they use to cover the boots, and it can ooze out. i think people call it a bloom. you can treat the boots so it doesn't come back.

Everyone is so organized! I've been meaning to go to the gym between when the cat wakes me up super early and the time when I need to be up for work. But it's just so cold and dark outside....

I usually set my alarm to go off in 15 minute increments starting an hour before I'm supposed to be in. Wake up usually with 30 minutes left, check the weather, get dressed and feed the cat, attempt makeup, grab a slice of bread and leave (super nice to live 5 minutes from the office). Once there I read the paper, update all our social media, grab a coffee and by then hopefully, sometimes, I'm ready for the day.

what about a place to donate food you might have leftover? during the holidays, groceries have those bins for canned goods, but what about the rest of the year?

25 Places to Donate Your Stuff

In 22 years, 17 addresses (on three continents and in seven cities). I've become used to living in a state of semi-permanence, and as much as I'd like to call where I grew up in Singapore "home," I don't think I really know the meaning of the word. The closest thing to it is the house in New Orleans my mom and I moved into post-Katrina. For me, it's sort of a comforting home base to retreat to. Plus, I get to see my mom while I'm there.

I'm hoping the new apartment I just moved into will be homeish, but that will likely last only a year, which is kind of a shame because it's the most beautiful place. But that said, I wouldn't trade the itinerant lifestyle for anything.

How Many Homes Have You Lived In? (And What Makes a Home, Anyway?)

My mother must be like yours, @ETHIDDA. I flew from New Orleans to Western Australia as an unaccompanied minor when i was 9 or 10. I basically grew up travelling and it was a very familiar flight. Delta had this room where they kept all the kids flying alone during layovers and I tried to sneak out because it sucked in there — a lot of big stuffed animals and gross snotty kids. I remember being very mad that my parents didn't trust me enough to just put me on the plane, and in retrospect they agreed they should have gone that route. I wasn't bored during the flights and took off the "unaccompanied minor" button because I wanted to be left alone, but I'm more of a solo flier anyway.
But, like some other commenters say, it's about how the child feels. You might scar them for life if you shove them on a plane and they hate flying. It's just a shame that you don't get to go in the cockpit anymore.

i agree with @KD_MUSE. when we went to the family camp in grand isle, we all had these personalized poles my grandfather made for all the grandkids. even though i wasn't particularly good at fishing when i was young, i felt included.

also, kids seem to really like squirmy things, and i remember we had a lot of fun hooking minnows onto the poles. my cousin would wear them on his fingers like little hats -- strange kid. but learning how to cast the line was fun too. make it a fun occasion. if there are other kids around, it might become competitive, and that can be fun too.

oh god, those pillows look kind of evil, like they're up to no good.

i have a friend who has frames everywhere that have the original stock photos in them. those people are not your family.

also, mismatched store-bought iron crosses hung up all over a wall. i guess that's cute if you collect a cross from every place you travelled, but not if you get one from every pier 1 store in your state.

the "keep calm and carry on" posters should go without saying, yet almost every house tour has one

that bodum grill is great! i have it in orange (which was on sale for a while, maybe still) and the fact that you can latch it shut is perfect if you're going to the beach and want to just dump a bunch of coals in it, pack it in the car and go. it fits 4-6 burgers and several ears of corn. the only thing that was a bitch of an issue was putting shiskabobs since the sticks were a bit long.
