my husband's workplace, a startup of greige cubicles and absolutely no art or surface decoration, was so pitiful that I got one of these for $25 to hang in the lunchroom. he said it had to be inoffensive, and this seemed to fit the bill. All these tech geeks loved it, they obviously dont spend time at design blogs, so it was new to them. It has become an unofficial mantra around the place, start-ups being somewhat rollercoasterish.

Over my life I've been a omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, then back to occas fish/fowl flexitarian and finally a full blown grass fed local beef slow food locavore.

But I feel so much better healthwise, not eating meat, and gasp, I think it is better being a vegetarian for the planet in terms of methane offgassing. I think some people can and should still eat local meat, just treat it like a celebration food; and not mindlessly include in two/three meals a day. And some people feel better if they skip it and eat local grains and beans.

Where I live in the North Bay Area, it is against the law to burn wood on smoggy days, even if you have an highly efficient, non-catalytic EPA approved wood stove or insert. And these devices cut particulate emissions by 90% or more. A wood fire in a fireplace is way worse.

Sorry, but if air quality is already poor, you may be in violation of the law by burning wood in a fireplace. Check out the South Coast Air Quality Management District guidelines here. http://www.aqmd.gov/news1/2008/HealthyHearths.html

Good news: Looks like your landlord can get a rebate on a cleaner burning gas log. In any event, Try to convince him to pay for a chimney cleaning....it is good investment to protect his and your property as chimney/attic fires are no joke. Good luck.

In this installation you have thermal mass water that will radiate heat back into your room at night...and you cannot open the window to take advantage of the cooler night air. It would help modulate temperature swings, but over weeks of hot sunny days I think the interior temperature would gradually climb.

i agree with sfgail, why not install a sunshade on the exterior of the building, reflect the heat before it enters the home. Or plant a decidious vine on the exterior of the home and train it to block the sun.

if you really wnated to be green about it, use recycled glass jars of food products you would buy anyway, like spaghetti sauce, add several drops of tee tree oil as a antifungal and add boiled water. Bottled water is a eco nightmare!

i'm am definitely happier about being green when i open a winter PGE bill of $45 when my neighbor is shocked by her $400 bill for the same month.

But in some ways I feel more panicked because the bad news of global warming, food shortages, geopolitical strife over resources, peak oil, etc. etc. is everywhere now and it seems the human race is not going to cooperate fast enough to prevent some pretty terrible changes. SO on that front, ignorance was bliss. But no going back once you know.

those kits are bogus....you are much better off going to a local nursery and gettign a healthy tree suited for your climate and yard size. Ponderosa pines belong in the conifer forest, they are terrible urban/suburban landscape specimens.

i agree with hejiranyc, this house is an ugly monstrosity! I think we definitely need to legislate zero energy homes, (as well as most other actions to help slow global warming) otherwise most people will not make the personal choice to do the right thing. Small individual actions are helpful, but just a drop in the bucket compared to what needs to happen now (actually yesterday).

Post peak oil I bet that eyesore becomes barracks for suburban refugees who farm the once tidy lawns.

i'm with 2lastnames, my partner would never allow such feminine space/colors in our shared abode. i like the compromised style we have crafted, but some day i'll have a little studio/retreat space that is all ruffly, frothy, floral and pink.

i love their dinnerware...except for the cereal/soup bowls....they stack fine for cabinet storage but fit so awkwardly in our dishwasher. And beware the factory seconds, they are inexpensive for a reason....my $10 platter cracked in two after the second use. it was so pretty....sigh.

i think topher delaney is sooo overrated. i have seen some of her other installations in the bay area and her plant choices always seem inappropriate for the climate (but are cool looking so I assume that is why she chose them) and they end up suffering. That misuse of plant material makes me see red. And waste of burning hydrocarbons to generate needless extra greenhouse gases for someone's viewing pleasure seems downright criminal. although it is done all the time by everyone, we are all guilty of that one.
