i think if you can't strip, you're probably not allowed to stain either. i would look into it first.

BUT, if you can do something to the floors I don't think staining will work w/o stripping. maybe you could paint them using a floor paint.

good luck, but i think those floors are beautiful. maybe live with them for a while and they'll grow on you?

so... I was dieing for a tufted sofa for my new place. unfortunately all the really awesome ones I was looking at were WAY, WAY, WAY out of my price range. so, I got frustrated...

and then I called MOM!!! she took me to all the Mom places, including Macy's Furniture Outlet. There we found the perfect tufted couch and matching chair. It has only one row of buttons, but other than that it was perfect. I think it came in 3 or 4 colors, but we picked chocolate brown. PERFECT

And the best part, it was about 1/3 of what I was planning to spend. I think it came out to $1200 and I signed up for a Macy's card, saving something like 10%!

As for now, the couch is holding up wonderfully. And we are always hopping, slouching, plopping, etc. on it.

its so funny that you post this today...

i just moved to a new place and am so lucky that it has a dishwasher (YAY!).

but this weekend i was out of town for father's day and returned home late last night to the most horrible smell. after a little hunting around we tracked it to the dishwasher. we had left dirty dishes in the dishwasher for the weekend. and i think it was probably worse because the air was off and the windows were closed. now we know better.

so... add this to that list:

RUN THE DISHWASHER!!!

i know this doesn't really have to do with butter wrappers, BUT... when you make rice krispie treats, the best way to keep them from sticking to your hand is to wet your hand a bit w/ some cold water. works like a charm!!!

Home Depot sells this enamel chip repair stuff in the paint department. There's a chip filler and then a "paint." I know its okay for sinks/tubs/etc. Not sure if its "cookware-approved." Might be worth checking out though.

Hey folks, I posted this on the NY thread this morning but apparently I'm the ONLY ONE who's posted there today!

So, I just signed a lease for a new apartment yesterday. YAY! 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a living room/kitchen combo.

The only downside is the living room area is a bit small. SOOO... I came to apartment therapy in search of something I saw quite a while back, a dining table/island that was attached to the wall on one end and on suspension cables on the other so that it could fold up and out of the way. Pretty sure it was made out of wood. BUT... I've been searching for that post for hours with no luck.

HELP! Thanks.

my grandma has one too (put in around 1990? when the remodel was done, i think)

she actually has 2.

one for the paper towels and the other is for tin foil and wax paper.

the only problem is that the paper towels now come so "jumbo-sized" that when she puts in a new roll, she can't close it for a while because there's not enough space in the wall part.

i've lived in my current apartment for only 2 years. i've moved my bedroom furniture about 15 times.

i love a change.

and i love the challenge of being a single woman moving things, building things (including my coffee table) and painting things (this old picture frame i found in my grandparent's attic... funky with a cool teal paint job).

honestly, this bed is SOOO beautiful, simple yet eye-catching. thanks so much for all of your advice. i've been indecisive for such a long time but i just keep coming back to this post.

i'm thinking that i'm going to attempt to do it on my own and i think that modfan is totally right that i should go ahead and get the slats from IKEA and maybe use that book that AllyPo recommends as a guide.

The main thing is that little lip area where the clock is. but maybe i can just add that to a preexisting IKEA bed.

my plan is to get it done this weekend (or at least start it) so hopefully i make up my mind by then.

thanks all! i'll be sure to send over pics of my final result.

i got a kindle for christmas. i'm addicted. i work FT and am a FT student so i'm constantly on the go. i always like to read in my free moments (however fleeting they are). instead of having a paperback or two in my bag, i pull out the kindle am and ready to go. if i finish it, i can immediately head to the kindle store and pick out a new book. and it's cheaper (from my experience, each book is between three and fifteen dollars less than the paper copy). it doesn't get much better than that.

sure they have to fix a few glitches, (the screen could be a bit bigger and the pages could turn faster) but i think the kindle is an amazing concept (especially for all of you environmentally conscious people out there). and, when you first get a kindle, they tell you to send them you're thoughts. obviously they listen, as the second kindle seems to have fixed some things that people didn't like.
