I have ALWAYS WANTED to live in an A-frame. Or a lighthouse. Love your place!

I don't even have kids but I have this coffee table and think it's perfect in every way. It's round, it's hard (but if it scratched it would look fine), it wipes down easily, and it's a big container.

Windowless bedrooms aren't legal in NY but builders get around that by calling them "home offices." People use them as bedrooms a lot.

I met my neighbors the first time I looked at my house. When my boyfriend and I finally bought it our 87-year-old neighbors in the attached house next door expressed joy that we'd bought it--even though they'd only met us that one time. At our closing no one had the keys to the property; the lawyers and realtors told us to get the keys from the neighbors. They are really the best. They watch the house when we're gone, even watering our tomatoes. They've lived on the block forever and they know everyone and everything that goes on. On top of it all they're hilarious. We've had them over with other friends; they're the most gracious of houseguests and they are the life of the party. I couldn't have asked for better neighbors.

I am not married but I own a home with a partner I've been with for 6 years. He's been married before. We aren't having children. We plan to be together until one of us dies. I do find it daunting that one of us will die first (eek.) For all the questions we get about when we'll get married, I just haven't been able to come up with a compelling reason to do it. I feel strongly (and often in conversations express) that marriage (or any long term relationship) is about finding someone you can negotiate with. We have that, and we frequently renegotiate. (Things change over time, after all!) I'm not totally sold on "for better or for worse." "Sickness and health:" yes. I believe in that. It's good to know that my partner would care for me if I was sick, and (though I'm far more squeamish) I know that to do the same for him would be to experience the greatest love possible. But if someone becomes willfully negligent or bitter or horrible for some reason...what kind of masochist would stay? Why promise to?
I recently had a conversation with a teenager about the benefits of getting married. The only one I could come up with is that it works to the advantage of the person who makes less money if there is a divorce. In my relationship, that's me. If my boyfriend and I broke up we'd sell our house (or rent it, or he'd buy me out, or something like that) and split. But if we were married and we broke up I could claim some sort of entitlement to his money. It makes me feel icky to think of it.
I do hate referring to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend, though. We are both well over 30; he's over 40. There should be better words.

I have 5 of these in my house and I love them. For the one at the top of my staircase I got a big wooden Virgin Mary on a trip to Mexico. I've got a kind of shrine going there which I love because I see it so often; that's what I imagine for you--except with your Asian-Zen vibe. It could set the spiritual tone as you and your guests enter your home. In the living room I have one with 2 prints by an artist I like and glass orbs and globes along the sill on the bottom. In the bathroom I have 2 of them with cacti, succulents, and big painted Italian tile I found left behind by my home's previous owners. I haven't committed to what to do with the one in the kitchen yet. My home's previous owner hung paintings in them and placed (fake) ivy in long low pots along the bottom and placed ceramic pitchers on them as well. (I went that route for a while but then moved the pitchers.) Don't fill it in! It can rotate so many different things!

This is very similar to the kitchen in my new (old) house and I'm having the same inclination not to tear down the wall between the kitchen and dining room. I have been considering how to restore the vintage cabinets but still customize and update the kitchen; your success makes me feel confident!
