Before & After: Painted Furniture & Cabinetry Projects
Best of 2011

I love our pre-lit tree, but will make note of the tool if it's ever needed in the future. We have LED lights (the warm tone ones, not the weird vibrating neon ones) so hopefully we won't have that problem for a long time.

To adamwa, I moved to a faux tree when I left Texas for Chicago and realized that the entire winter was about battling all things dry. The idea of trying to keep a tree hydrated (and not a tinderbox fire hazard) seemed daunting when I couldn't even keep my shins from getting itchy. :)

Every year I try to find that treasure trove town or neighborhood in Chicago that does it up big so we can take the kids through, but I've never found a solid place.

Anyone know of a great, well-saturated area for a holiday lights drive?

Personally, I get a kick out of stereotypes that other people have of Americans (Texans especially) when I travel.

I kinda figure you have to have a sense of humor about your homeland if you have the character to make it through those winters.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the scenes in Peewee's Big Adventure that stereotype Texas. I still tell people, "There's no basement in the Alamo!" with as thick an accent as I can muster.

C'mon folks. Don't be negative. Enjoy the spirit of the post, but then enlighten us in a nice way about all the other wonderful things that are there to discover. Personally, I love going to Lake Superior Provincial Park with my kids. It's gorgeous and most people in Chicago have no idea that a place that beautiful is only a day's drive away.

Even slightly more efficient than just straight into the oven, put them all on a cookie sheet and then into the oven. One felled swoop!

5 Tips to Make Your House Appear Cleaner Than It Is

Aww come on people. This was meant to be an overview of "fun items" (in the author's own words), kitschy flea market types of things. Everyone gets so hung up on this stuff and jumps in without absorbing and understanding where the authors are coming from.

As a Texan living in Chicago, I will personally testify to the fact that if you get upset over people generalizing your home region with stereotypes, you better just GET OVER IT. At some point when you're so far from home, those kitschy little things may become endearing.

Scented candles OK, but keep them out of the areas where food will be consumed. P-U.

That sign cracks me up! There must be a story behind it. Can the homeowners explain?

There are a few quotable moments that have come from my husband and kids. I think this would be a really fun way to keep those moments alive and around.

"Real friends and guests don't care about this stuff."

Amen.

We had our wedding at a lake house on Lake Michigan. We couldn't afford silver and china for all, so we opted for "as nice as possible" clear plastic plates paired with silver plastic flatware molded to look like the good stuff. It was catered by Wishbone and the whole event was elegantly-backyard barbeque'ish. I honestly don't think anyone cared that anything was plastic. We were paying for it all ourselves, they knew that, and we provided a really fun evening for all. That's what really mattered.

If you can afford to have a stash of buffet plates and flatware, go for it. Your real friends don't want you to go broke buying 20 sets of dishes and flatware.

We sent out our pre-Thanksgiving potluck with friends invites last week. I just think that if these are the people you really want to spend some time with, you need to get on their holiday schedule early enough so that they aren't burdened with conflicts.

I put them on the bed in my vintage camper (see: not insulated well) and they were fabulous on a 30 degree night. At home, we prefer to keep it cotton.

@ElaneB, what if you found some beautiful piece of fabric (sheer and gauzy or maybe vintage tea towel) to drape just over the bottles?

Also, update to my earlier post, I've sketched out what I'm working up for my own butler tray to use as a party bar: http://www.kitschykitten.com/2011/11/07/upcycling-an-old-dresser-drawer/

I'd love some ideas on attaching the legs if anyone has any.

Beautiful Booze: Bar Carts
11/7/11 2:07 PM

If you're the sort who likes to repurpose/craft your furnishings, here's a thought:

(I'm working on this project right now.)

Take 1 old dresser drawer, 4 old railing spindles, then (preferably) some found wood to brace the 4 legs. Screw the spindles into the underside of the drawer, screw the bracing wood into the spindles, paint the whole thing whatever color you fancy (or leave as-found) and stock the drawer with booze and glasses.

I'm considering making the legs foldable using brackets available at the hardware store, so I can tuck the bar drawer away when not entertaining.

If anyone has thoughts on improving this project, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!

Hi! I had no idea you guys did this feature! Goodness. How fantastic!

We got the LoFlyte and got pretty well down the road in fixing it up until my husband decided it was just way too uncomfortable for him. He's 6' 5" and knew I loved the camper, so he didn't want to say anything. Now we're really happy with our 1955 Yellowstone. There are lots of pics of it here:
http://www.kitschykitten.com/category/vintage-camper/

I love all things vintage and I love camping and family road trips, so this has been the perfect outlet for us. The summer was a blast, running home from work and hitching up to head off to a lakeside spot with the kids for the weekend.

I'd love to show you all the Yellowstone sometime if you care to revisit the topic. :)

Hey! Those are my chairs. :)

Thanks, AT. How fun!

We picked up our chairs here and there for an average of $10 apiece. If you can find the color you like in an off-the-shelf spray paint, I'd recommend going that route. Otherwise, if you have an OCD fit like I did about the color, invest in a spray gun (a decent one was $100) so you can have your color custom matched. I paint a lot of furniture, so that was the smartest route for me.

I've been known to paint furniture for friendly strangers bearing sangria. (hint hint)

Kidding...or am I? ;)
