Another moral to this story is to make sure you get a fan with a down rod. Our house came with a fan in the master bedroom and is set flush in combination with a slanted ceiling! It's a phenomenon - it's attached to the ceiling and it spins but the lack of air between it and the ceiling means it has ZERO effect. Paint question!! I have a very similar "before" kitchen and desperately need a quick fix before I can gut the whole thing, bring down a wall and make my dreams come true! What kind of paint would you use on a formica/laminate sort of cabinet and on a varnished wood? Was there a lot of sanding involved? That terrifies me most... This is great! For the first time, I have the right space to start a little herb garden (albeit on my balcony, in planters..). I live in Toronto and the weather's been really inconsistent so that hasn't helped... but my little seeds seem to be sprouting nonetheless!
