We use Seventh Generation or Method (for baby's clothes and our clothes). For washing cloth diapers, I swear by Charlie's Soap.

I just paid for my subscription last week, so this kind of pisses me off. I guess I should stick to parenting blogs, although I can't find too many of those that don't drive me crazy.

We got one when we had our home security system installed -- it's way cheaper with a landline than using cell signals. We have super-basic VOIP service (I think it's $10 a month) and never make or receive calls on it.

Love it, and the mobile is the best thing I've ever seen.

I store quite a bit of my jewelry on a decorative bird cage. It's a little bit of a pain because I actually hook necklaces and earrings through the wires, but the end result looks really cool. Also, the fact that it's a pain for me means it's also a pain for burglars -- we were burglarized a few months ago, and the guy didn't get much jewelry because it would've taken him too long to unhook it from the damn thing.

One thing -- make sure to have something closed for storing silver. Whatever silver I had on the birdcage tarnished very quickly, so I had to put that stuff into a box. I guess it's the air?

We have air conditioners, but still set up an inflatable pool in the yard every summer. We keep it filled only for a few days at most (we don't use any chemicals) and then use it to water the yard.

Even though it's just a little pool and we can't do much but hang out in there, it's incredibly relaxing and fun.

I love this, and we just ordered the exact same crib last night and I'm SO excited about it. Also, cute kitty!!

I think the brown looks much better with what you have in the nursery. The red is cool, but it would need more red stuff to go with it -- as is, it looks a bit out of place.

I think that any guest staying in a small place with a new baby is going to hear baby noise no matter where everybody sleeps. I'd probably just have the baby sleep in our room and give the guests the guest room (if we had a guest room -- we don't).

Love the dog and like the orange, although my first thought is that they must be Chicago Bears fans and I'm not sure that's a good thing.

I might be weird, but I think this room looks AWESOME. It might be better to just go with the look it has going, rather than trying to tone it down. I'm thinking a cheeky-lodge sort of look, maybe with a light fixture that involves antlers and some kind of faux taxidermy, like this or something shown here. And definitely funky curtains.

I loved that movie and can't even imagine how beautiful Green Animals must be in person. Now I want to make a little topiary miniature pinscher for my yard.

"However, if you amortize the cost of a well made piece of furniture over the cost of replacing something several times that was cheaply made, both fiscally and environmentally higher quality makes more sense even if you have to do without for the 'I want it now' time being."

This is a nice idea, but I can't afford to "amortize the cost of a well-made piece of furniture" over the years. I need furniture now and I get the best stuff I can afford. Some of that is from Ikea.

Fortunately for me, I don't care what some privileged rich person on the internet thinks about that.

If they're big enough to fit over a light bulb, I think they'd make very cool light fixtures.

Holy crap, my boyfriend and I made the exact same thing (almost) a couple years ago, although we dismantled a light fixture we got at Home Depot for the light and made the rest of the body by hand. You can see a crappy picture of it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stupidtabby/3209755265/in/set-72157600560887831/.

Ours was inspired by something I saw in an Anthropologie catalog that was incredibly expensive.

You know what would be awesome? Covering your fridge with astroturf. You could even attach velcro to little football or baseball action figures and stick them on there, instead of magnets.

Oh, wow, I really love it.

I would love to do something like this when we (someday) finish the second floor of our house. If the window could have a screen and still look attractive, it would be like a tiny little sleeping porch.
