If painting is an option, you could paint the back wall behind the shelves a color that goes with your style and leave the shelves as is or painted white to contrast. Then, no matter what you add, you have a beautiful backdrop and don't have to worry about hiding it.

if your daughter wants a comfy alternative to a chair, i would suggest a slightly more modern version of a bean bag chair...a lovesac or fatboy.

I find it interesting that people can flat out say I hate painted brick or I love it...I think each case is unique and it seems as though the owners put a lot of thought into their decision. That being said, I think that I dislike painting brick because it ignores the uniqueness of each individual brick and washes over their form....

I would love to see someone paint a brick house, especially a row house like this, where they considered the form of the brick. Aside from the reveal on the front of the house on the left, I think that it would have been more interesting if the edge bricks were painted individually, rather than drawing a straight line down the brick. If you were to paint only the bricks that were more than 50% on the line, the edge would be raw, and would open up the possibility for your neighbor to use a different color and link to your edge without such a harsh line.

I agree that it would be great to consult and encourage your neighbors to protect their brick and join you in painting, there are so many ways to coordinate choosing colors that are unique but complimentary.

this was posted in 2008....? While I think it is a wonderful project and has excellent execution, I am left wondering why Apartment Therapy is posting articles from 4 years ago?

This post makes me like apartment therapy again...even a bit more. I find it difficult to check in on a regular basis because of the obsession with owning things and decorating the perfect house, but i love that this article has considered the qualities of a home.

I think a really neat idea might be hanging just one in a slightly larger frame, or hanging 3 in a series of mid-size frames, and rotating the tracts out depending on your mood or before you have people over. You would only have to buy 1-3 frames and you could safely store the rest until you swap them out.

This is the most odd house tour I have seen yet. I am an avid book reader and collector and was hoping to see a large well stored collection, but instead there are a few ikea book shelves and a series of odd close ups. I agree that the photo quality is a bit lacking. It is always nice to see a glimpse of how other people live especially when it is a unique style or varies from my own, this however was a little dull.
