My husband didn't see the point of a dutch oven, but he agreed to buy the cheap Ikea one. NOW he sees the point - and the dutch oven is still going strong after one year of use and abuse. Maybe if this one dies, we'll upgrade to something better but for now, if works.

@original poster : didn't you say you just spent two months renovating ? Have you cleared with the downstairs neighbors whether their complints were with everyday noise or with noise caused by the renovation work itself ?

Yesterday was a no-cook day, with just left-overs from Friday evening : guacamole, humus, various dips, chocolate mousse, reheated chili. Today saw the end of the chili, and I'm making a Lucullus vealroast for tonight. And something to go with it, with a leek. I have one sad leek in the fridge, waiting to be cooked...

Restrictive Diets at Dinner Parties: How Far Should a Host Go to Accommodate? The New York Times

Maybe it's just me, but I like my guests to enjoy what they're being served. So I ask in advanc,e and I do my best to offer something they will eat. I honestly don't care why they won't eat something. I invite them to dinner, I do my best to accomodate. Now, if they didn't tell me in advance, I'll try to accomodate as well, but I might not have anything suitable to offer. I won't be offended if they don't touch the dish though. Who am I to dictate their diet ?

THANK YOU Pearmelon.
I don't know any picky eaters. I know people who don't eat variosu things because of health issues, convictions or because eating one bite would make them gag. All those reasons are legitimate in my eyes and I try to accomodate them as much as I can. Sometimes it means I will make several different dishes with little warning signs "this one has tomato !". Cooking without certains ingredients is not impossible, how do you think those people cook eat everyday ? I find it exciting because it forces me to search for recipes and ingredients that I normally wouldn't use. I found a bunch of new favorites this way.

I completely second Pearmelon, you don't need to brown the ingredients separately. I only use one dash of oil int he beginning and cook some onions and garlic until golden and tender, and then I just add the rest, finely diced. If the pot gets too full I wait until things have cooked a little and take up less space to add more. And I use a BIG pot :)
