Apachejaz: That is a brilliant idea. We've been stuggling for 4 years in our small bathroom to come up a with a workable towel hanging solution.

To the problem at hand - just painted our bathroom Benjamin Moors 'Feather Gray" and we really like how it looks and feels in our small bathroom. The color shifts between blue, gray and lavender - http://www.flickr.com/photos/maryja/7265833464/in/photostream

I loves me a tiny house and this certainly fits the bill. BUT...it looks like many other Tumbleweed Houses that I've seen. I'm not saying that you should go hog-wild with decor but there is nothing in the minimalist design present that gives me a sense of the personality of the person(s) living there.

I am the last to caution anyone about being bold with color (you should see me house!) but my personal experience is that you should be very careful about dark colors in a bathroom. Or at least how you accessorize / use art.

We painted a very small bathroom (5x8 sounds right) a dark eggplant. It was lovely. BUT when I stood in front of the mirror with my hairdryer I couldn't see my hair. LOL! It blended into the dark color of the wall! Because of the way the door opened, we couldn't hang art on that space so we ended up repainting everything a bright lime green so there was more contrast. Also, it made us giggle. :)

We have the Chantal kettle in red and absolutely LOVE it. Stainless steels are too hard to keep clean and always end up looking crappy, so I'm not going to go back to them.

The Chantal replaced a 'glass' kettle (I think it was a Bodum) that had replaced a Revere. It was good in theory, but got too hot to handle and remembering to use the heat diffuser on our electric burners was an extra step we grew to hate. Boiling water should not include extra steps.

While, I'm sure that there were practical considerations in re-doing the bathroom (Carpeting? Really?) the reason that I can't embrace the 'after' is that it looks like every.single.bathroom you'd find in a Restoration Hardware catalog.
Whatever the problems with the 'before', at least it was unique.

In what world is Patricia's Whimsical Cottage living room red? It's bright pink. It even says in the post you linked to that she painted it bright pink.

Yes, very timely post. We purchased a 670sq/ft house and the door to our bathroom takes up a lot of valuable real-estate in our living room so we've known since day one that a barn-door was in our future. However, finding resources for an indoor version was proving tricky. This will be very helpful.

I look at that space and just want to fill it with plants of all sizes. Sort of an indoor greenhouse with interesting under lighting and trails of leaves leading into other the areas.

This is not even close to a dilemma - it's a preference. As in: some people want a dominant color, others want different colors - and maybe not even complimentary colors.

The real question should be: what do you prefer and why? And even then the answers are still a matter of personal preference and one shouldn't be considered "right" and the other "wrong".

"I think it's unfair to make this all about "AT was created by a man." There's a bit of gender discrimination inherent in that statement which seems hypocritical, all things considered."

I read phoneill's statement differently than you, gregory. I understood her to say that a site about home/home care/design etc., 'created by a man' was an ironic place for a post which perpetuates the notion that men decorate for, and crave, a 'man cave' whereas women are the true source of style, warmth and comfort in our homes.

A caveat for those of you considering buying vintage: after doing much research my husband purchased a Bernina Record 830 (considered by many to be the gold standard of sewing machines of the 1970's) off of eBay for me for my Christmas present. I didn't have an opportunity to use it until almost a month later when it became clear that there were some mechanical issues at play. After dropping it off with an experienced Bernina repair person I was informed that it was 'unrepairable', but by that time it was too late to return it to the buyer and eBay wouldn't/couldn't get involved. I've just brought it to a different repair person for a second opinion but the outcome my be the same.

So, while I totally agree with going vintage, do yourself a favor and make sure you test it/have it looked at immediately (or at least within the return timeframe) and if the seller says 'it works' but 'as is', look for another seller.

I think that hanging it properly is part of the answer, as is framing it, but I would suggest an alternative route to the shadow box because I believe your room could use some architectural detail.

My idea, and I hope that I can explain it clearly, is that you could install some sort of floor to ceiling wood panel, slightly wider than the textile itself. How you construct the panel is up to you (wide vertical or horizontal planks, for instance) but the wood itself would need to be stained and sealed to a lovely glow so it acts as a visual frame - kind of like a color block behind a print. Hang the the textile on a rod on the panel, add some direct lighting and voila! You fill the space some and add textural interest.

I grew up watching the show although, due to my lack of a television, I haven't seen it in years. I will, however, always love Tommy Silva.

I'm so glad you posted this. I hope to see AT branch out from the MCM rut they are in and start posting more broadly stylistically. While I appreciate MCM, I actually find it dull and I see a tendency for apartments to all look disappointingly the same.

Rock on, Wes & Kayla! Shake up AT with variety that represents a cross section of tastes.

Amen,VLADCOLE! I've been thinking the same thing about AT for a few months now.

My husband and I upgraded from a 470sf apartment to a 670sf cottage six months ago. We still don't know what to do with all the extra space!

I do love the challenge that comes with living small - it presents more opportunity for creativity.

I used "Peony" in my office/guest room closet and "Wild Pink" on the walls. I really like them both. The room is still a work in progress but you can see it here:
