I don't like the partial curtain either. It reminds me of the fake shutters many, many houses have to frame their windows. Or that silly scarf-sized pretend folded blanket at the end of the beds in cheap motels. In my opinion the option to close the curtains should be there. It just looks cheap to me.

We turned our formal dining room- which is small and cozy and has the least natural light- into our tv room. Our family room in the back of the house- which has lots of light and opens to back yard is a combo living room/dining room. It works great for us with the added bonus that the tv is now situated far from the bedrooms so late night movie watching doesn't disturb early-to-bed family members.

Another tip I like is to keep the furniture up off the floor. Leggy furniture (as opposed to a big block of sofa eating up square footage) makes a room feel bigger.

I prefer the couch against the wall. Seeing more floor space makes the room feel larger. Also, there's much better flow for moving about the space.

One thing I like in the inspiration, is how the daybed dominates the yellow stool/table. The thing that strikes me as a bit "off" in your room right now is the coffee table. It seems too big, too square for the smallish golden chair and the daybed--all I saw was white table at first. Changing out that table would be a good start I think.

I like it for winter in an adult-only setting--especially if you don't have padded chairs. In my house, though, I know my 7-year old would not survive a meal without spillage or wiping his hands on it!

This is a pretty silly solution. If you must "disguise" the tv, how about leaning a painting or other piece of art against it--something for you and others to look at instead of provoking a curiosity to peek behind the curtain...

Love the apartment especially the embroidery hoop display over the bed.

Hey, AT, what's with the ads for Airborne that appear directly over the pics in the slideshow? Hate it, very tacky!!!

We are using our formal dining room as the tv room. It's cozy and just off the kitchen for easy snack access. Our family room is off the kitchen on the other side of the house and we set up our dining space and a sitting/reading/game playing space in that room. We really like having the family room as a tv-free space.

Gorgeous! This is absolutely one of my favorite kitchens I've seen on this site. Great use of space and the natural wood accents perfectly keep the minimalism from seeming stark. I really appreciate a space that acts as a backdrop for the lives lived in it. Thanks for sharing.

Electronics in front of a window so that cords and back can be seen from the outside through the glass.

Dusty candles that have never been lit.

Pillows or cushions as extra seating for guests--my back wants a chair, thank you! Actually, I would also include stools or backless benches as dining table seating.

If I'm interested in something from Ikea, first I check for it on Craigslist. Not only do I often find someone selling the bookcase, chair, sofa that I'm interested in for half the price, it is also a great way to see how the piece has held up over time.

Your fancy silhouette of chalkboard paint over the small table is fresh & fun--I like it a lot & I've gotten pretty tired of chalkboard paint in general. LOVE the color choices & the white framed art display. Very cool.
