I loved my 190-sq-foot NYC studio and still miss it sometimes (now I cohabitate in a 1 BR). It was a corner unit with high ceilings, so even though it was tiny it got lots of light and a great cross-breeze when the windows were open. I painted it pale blue with sheer curtains, and it always felt very open and airy. It was also super quick to clean--ideal for a messy person like me! The location was perfect, too: on a beautiful block near Riverside Park. How Small is the Smallest Space You've Ever Called Home? Reader Survey |

Fudge (regular and penuche) or pralines. You said you've done meringues, but you can switch things up by adding different ground nuts, or make a pavlova with fruit and whipped cream (or individual pavlovas if that's less messy to serve). I second soups, chili, curry, dal... Some are not as quick to make as others but if you make one on a Sunday afternoon you can have leftovers all week. Or, for a quick weeknight meal that keeps well for leftovers, warm grain or pasta salad with lots of raw or lightly cooked vegetables and some feta cheese. Lately I've been eating what I call "savory strawberry salad sandwiches:" sliced strawberries, spinach, and feta cheese on bread with a little mayo (this was born out of one of those "only-odds-and-ends-in-the-fridge-so-why-not-just-throw-it-all-together" days). Also delish with sliced nectarine. Try This! Strawberry Sandwiches |

I like making pie crusts, and I also think that making something by hand is part of the pleasure of the whole experience. Eating the pie and serving it to others is more emotionally satisfying when it is something you made yourself from start to finish. Make or Buy? Pie Crust |

Anna, I feel your pain! We have no drawers in our tiny kitchen and hardly any counter space. We solved the problem by buying two magnetic office-supply caddies from the container store and putting them on the side of the fridge (we had to reinforce with additional magnets to get them to stay put). One is for silverware and the other is for small utensils like measuring spoons (wooden spoons and other big tools do go in a jar on the counter). Help! My family used to have an annual "work weekend" too for our shared family house. I always volunteered for house-painting duty. I love cmcinnyc's idea of ratatouille; I also suggest a big pot of chili (or two pots if one is vegetarian and one has meat) if you want something a little heartier after all that hard work. When I turned 16, I requested a pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing for my birthday party (a summer pool party!), and two-tiered like a wedding cake. My mom usually used boxed mixes, except for pumpkin cake, which was (and is) a Christmas tradition. All my friends thought I was a weirdo, but I still remember it as my favorite birthday cake ever.
