It's a running joke in our house that however long a recipe says it will take, it will take me at least 15-20min. longer. This is, I believe, due to what's mentioned here: unfamiliarity with a new recipe. Even with old stand-bys, however, I find it often takes me longer. Maybe this is because I'm just slow...?
I've actually started timing how long a recipe takes- from getting the first ingredient out to serving the first portion- and writing the results on the top of my recipes.

Thanks to a (much needed and sunny) vacation, I am now a few weeks behind. In the spirit of stick-to-it-ive-ness, I'm going to try and see it through.

My January(/February) cure project has been creating a useful and visually pleasing entry way in my entryway-less apartment. So far I've corralled the ShoeSituation (closet door unable to close due to the avalanche-like pile of shoes in the closet) with a door hanging shoe rack on the inside and have framed a few small paintings that are going to hang nearby. Am still on the hunt for a few hooks for jackets/bag and a front rug that actually absorbs water and dirt (as opposed to the old burlap sack currently bunched up in front of the door)

Day 10: Work on Your Goal Project Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/28/13 10:32 PM

This is actually my task for the month (creating a functional entry-space in my entryway-less living room). There are plans for a mail catch, front rug that actually works, the art I'm hanging on the 29th and a few hooks for everyday coats.
That's an awful lot for a monday evening, though, so today (and in the days to come until I get a chance to work on my ATJC project) I tried to focus on truly using our current, multi-stationed landing strips (i.e. putting shoes and winter wrappings IN the closet instead of in front/on the chair, taking lunchbox TO the kitchen instead of just putting on the chair, hanging purse from dining room chair instead of putting it on the chair - sensing a theme?)

It's been great to read everyone's trials and triumphs. We're all doing great! (or at least we're doing which, I don't know about you, is more than I was doing before)

I love the support/cheerleading that happens in the comments- hooray everyone!
status report: the pantry, freezer and inside the oven d remain untouched (but on the year's list). There are still a few lingering jobs to be done in the near future, perhaps on my catchup day? but already it feels so much better. Wiped shelves I haven't seen in two years, HEAVILY edited the condiments/leftovers and FINALLY cleaned the microwave and drying rack after way too long. Used AT's "sink full of soapy water" trick and a one-pot chili recipe for my home-cooked dinner so even after cooking it's clean and shiny. Onward!

Day 8: Weekend Chores - Flowers, Kitchen Cleaning & Make Yourself a Meal Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/13/13 10:25 PM

Oh noes! Been in the 'double shift' weekend world and it sucked. My recommendation is to do the homework this month, but maybe a smaller version of it? So instead of sorting through all your dishes, cleaning out the pantry, etc, tonight you can just do a basic clean (making sure there are no dishes in the sink, wiping off counters, throwing away old moldy food in the fridge) and putting some really delicious takeout on a fancy plate after (and definitely buy yourself flowers)

When I worked all weekend, every weekend, cleaning always seemed like a truly daunting task but one that, once a bit of it was done, made me feel way more balanced/at peace. One of the things I really love about the Cure is that while the means are 'cleaning' 'organizing,' the ends seem to be more about creating a space where you truly feel home. So this month romance yourself a bit (Do dishes by candlelight with some truly awesome soap) and maybe February can be your power-house cleaning month.

Cons;
-We love to cook and experiment so our kitchen is heavy on STUFF but light on storage (ONE drawer. in the whole kitchen)
-while dishes and surface cleaning happen on the regular, I know for a fact that our cabinets havent been wiped in...two years.
-The boyfriend is a sentimental-make-it-work thrifty to the point of hoarding type which will make getting rid of chipped/cracked dishes difficult.

Pros;
-Our Kitchen is tiny (again, ONE drawer.) which means less to clean!
-Sunday looks to be an empty, rainy/cold day, perfect for blasting 90's pop music and getting my elbow-grease on.
-Sunday is my day to cook anyway! going to pick up the few things I need to make this:

as well as a beautiful bowl of fruit (I've learned after week one that flowers + cats do not a happy home make)

I have had a few small, unframed watercolors made by my Great Aunt (a family legend) left to me by late grandmother, sitting on my dresser for over a year. Finally ordered a few inexpensive frames from dickblick today and am looking forward to hanging them in my entryway (my project for the month). I'll be able to see a reminder of two awesome, strong women every time I leave or enter.

Day 6: Choose a Piece of Artwork & Get Going on Framing It Apartment Therapy January Cure

I always love the IDEA of entertaining with lots of friends, but as a complete introvert, the thought of people (beyond the boyfriend/roommate) being in my house where I CAN"T ESCAPE makes me dizzy.
However, we do have a long-standing 'dinner+game night' tradition with a couple of friends of ours, so I'm using that as my January Cure party. To make it a bit more special I will totally be making invitations (easy to do when there's only two that need to go out) and paying extra attention to planning the pre-game dinner.

Day 7: Get Your Get-Together Together - Date, Guests, Invites Apartment Therapy January Cure - Day 7
1/10/13 5:43 PM

Ack! I love this (am I the only one talking about 'The Cure' to friends/family/coworkers??' I'm pretty sure everyone thinks I've joined some cult or something.)
I already tackled a big task on my list - sorting/OUTBOXING a ton of art supplies. It was necessary but a GIANT job and one that benefits only me, as I'm the only one who sees the studio. So, for my official January Project I think I'm going to stick to something small and highly aesthetic and get my entry way undercontrol. Currently there is no entryway and my usual post-work progression goes something like 'mail on side table, all bags and coats on the chair and/or floor. It's a) messy and b) the first thing one sees when entering so I feel like it will make a big difference to have some sort of system.
So excited!

Day 5: Select One Project from Your List to Complete this Month Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/8/13 5:35 PM

Like a lot of those who've commented already, I too am a not morning/morning person and need a little extra space between myself and the rest of the world. Usually I'm up by 6:30 to do yoga if it's a cross training day (am a runner) or 6:45 if it's not, to make coffee, shower and have time to sit and eat breakfast with S.O. We usually watch morning news shows and make snarky comments. after he leaves for work at 8, I make my lunch and try to get to work some time before 8:30 or 9.

My boyfriend and I have always done a combined families Thanksgiving the weekend after and so usually spend Thanksgiving proper just the two of us. Rather than try to compete with his mom's cooking (an exercise in futility- she is pretty awesome) we've adopted our own traditions. As anglophiles, we almost always drink tea and watch Doctor Who, and for dinner we have curry (made or takeout) and bemoan the loss of the "New World colonies"

Smitten Kitchen's Shatshuka ( http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2010/04/shakshuka/ )
It is our house's perfect food - it's one of the few recipes I know I can make right every time, it's hearty/spicy/tasty for the boyfriend, all those plus meat-free for me, we almost always have every ingredient on hand and it comes together in one pot.

I'll also be devouring my latest library finds: 'Not your mother's cassarole' and "veginomicon'

don't forget about mulberries! Here in Ohio, they're usually not ripe for another month, but thanks to a mild/warm spring our backyard tree is already ripening.
