Nice topic and thread. A while back, I wrote a comment on a house tour suggesting that using a buddha to decorate might be in poor taste, and it was met with total hostility. It's good to see that we can have some mature discourse. Whichever side we're on, it's nice to be respected. Buddhism as Decoration? |

Floating vinyl planks that look like wood are another alternative. They are sold under the name Allure Trafficmaster at Home Depot. I used them to cover a room with old 50's style tiles, and it looks great. It's been reviewed elsewhere here. It took me 2 days on the weekend to do a 13'x16' bedroom. The only tool needed is a sharp utility knife. Apartment Therapy Boston | Bathroom Carpeting: Temporary Alternative to Replacement Flooring |

Sheer white curtains (to cover the dark wood of and around the windows) and yellow paint on the walls will do wonders. Please don't paint the woodwork. Apartment Therapy DC | Good Questions: Painted Woodwork- Yea or Nay? |

Consumer Reports rates their cabinets to be quite durable. I have IKEA AKURUM birch cabinets, which are much pricier than the white melamine cabinets shown above. All the IKEA cabinets come with nice metal drawer sliders, and I chose solid wood doors to help with wear. I'm very satisfied after 2 years. I live in a midcentury house that did not have a front door either. I moved the side door to the front, and it's much more welcoming. It also improved the flow of traffic in the house. About half the homes in my area (all the same model house) do not have front doors. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Look!: House With No Door |

I've really enjoyed using Aura to repaint my totally matte white walls. I get good coverage with 1 coat using the Benjamin Moore Aura rollers that have a 3/8" nap and a fine white nap. The salesperson recommended that I cut-in first, then wait for that to dry (not long) before using a roller. He said that if I go back over a partially wet spot, it can ruin the smooth finish. If you're not comfortable there, it doesn't make sense to make it into your "the biggest investment" of your life. I like the pattern and texture, but it would look much better with softer colors that complemented the cabinets. A range of whites and taupes would have fit in, mixed in with muted blues and greens to make it look like water, or muted reds and oranges to make it it look like fire coming off of the stove. I agree with Randy Modern. If they are small, and have a modern finish like a brushed nickel, I think they are fine. I'm actually not a big fan of recessed lighting in older homes. I think recessed lighting looks nice in modern environments, but it looks industrial to me if that's the only lighting. Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Are Track Lights Tacky? |

You can hang sheer curtain from a rod over the vertical blinds. This gives you a lot options, while allowing you to use the curtain to cover up the blinds when you want to use them for more privacy and light control. Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Modern Clean Window Coverings? |

Thanks for the recommendations! I've only tried Aura paint among the low VOC paints, and I've been very happy with its amazing coverage, fast drying time, and sheen. It comes in all the standard Benjamin Moore colors, and a unique set of Aura collection colors. Because it is an acrylic paint, you need to cut-in your edges first and let that dry before doing the rest of your walls. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Best Eco-Friendly Paints |

Jenzroe, for the contact paper, search for "Metal FX Stainless Steel Contact Paper" on Amazon.com.
