Thanks so much Selena and Rockalita. That was it exactly. A great help. Apartment Therapy Chicago | House Tour: Jacob Laurie Do It Themselves in West Ridge |

Hi this isn't a question about this house but I'm not sure where else to post it. I'm looking for the house tour or story that was done a while ago with a really cute attic make over. I think the woman was a designer. She turned this very small attic into a cute guest bedroom and used a lovely marimeko fabric for the curtains. There were leaves space cupboards on either end. I think it had a pink feel to it. Wish I could be clearer. Can anyone help? Ring any bells? I'm sure there was also a story about their house and the main photo was of the living room. I've searched the house tours archives but can't seem to find it. Thanks everyone. Apartment Therapy Chicago | House Tour: Jacob Laurie Do It Themselves in West Ridge |

You absolutely need to use a primer if you are painting over veneer! It needs to be one that bonds to all surfaces (glass, plastic, tiles etc). This isn't just to reduce the number of coats of paint needed. Without the primer it doesn't matter how many coats of paint are used, the paint hasn't bonded to the surface. This means it will come off if it gets chipped or scratched. Sorry. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Tyler's IKEA Traby Credenza Hack |

It's not a good idea to stick something on to the counter tops as, whatever you use, it won't be sturdy enough for preparing food. It's not a huge job to replace the counter top (unless there is a whole lot more to this kitchen than you have shown). Ikea can cut to size and isn't too expensive. The cupboard doors can be primed and painted though, if there aren't too many of them, it may not cost much more to just replace the doors. I would replace the counter top and doors first and then decide if you need to do anything about the tiles. I think they will look much nicer when everything else isn't trying to match. There are almost no bathrooms, hallways or kitchens shown in this competition. There aren't enough photos of each place. Small doesn't just mean living and bedrooms. Maybe next year the requirement could be to show all rooms in the apartment and for the number of photos to be increased to 10. I know that it's these more awkward spaces in a small apartment that I am interested in seeing. It is good to see how people solve the space issue. Wow! Are the comments always this cruel with this competition? It's not a showroom, this is someone's home and they have invited us into it. I imagine they are reading the comments too. It may not be your personal style and you can vote that way but there is no need to just offer completely negative feedback that has no offer of alternative or suggestion. It's no wonder there aren't many entries this year. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Southwest #2: Tanya's Industrial Chic |

I wish all of the entries had more than 6 photos. It's not enough especially when house tours have 20 or more. Hardly seeing any kitchens or bathrooms and those are important too. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Northwest #1: Ana and Bob's Bay Area Nest |

I should have mentioned that another reason I was thinking dark grey is that it would reflect the shadows that come from the foliage outside and go beautifully with the green that you see through the window. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | SF Good Questions: How Do I Freshen Up My Bathroom? |

Pull up the carpet and lay some plain inexpensive tiles if you plan on changing them in a few years. I know this probably sounds crazy but you could even go with something the same colour as the shower tiles but larger in size. White would also work. Keep stripping the wallpaper and paint it dark grey. Try putting some dark grey (seriously dark) against the tiles and the toilet. I think it would actually pull the colours together. Change any of the brass fitting for stainless steel including the surround for the shower door. I wouldn't paint the cupboards white, I would stain them much darker. The idea behind all this is that you include the colours that are already there (toilet, shower, vanity) rather than work against them. Then I'd get a much larger mirrored cabinet for the wall (Ikea do some inexpensive ones) or you could put a couple side by side and hang some framed fabric, maybe some gorgeous Florence Broadhurst, on the wall in the toilet. The walls are a 'cool' (predominantly blue tint) white and they are making the 'warm' (predominantly yellow tint) white of the cabinets appear more yellow. When they are put together they usually also make one another look a little dingy. Apartment Therapy Chicago | CHI Good Questions: Color to "Whiten" These Cabinets? |
