A preemptive comment on the TV in front of the fireplace: it is a non-functioning fireplace and all outlets and cables really left us no choice but to position the TV there. It actually works beautifully and we wouldn't change it at all.

They are in danger because they are for the most part very modest homes in upscale neigborhoods. The construction of many of them is very experimental and are not in the greatest condition after 50 years and are treated as teardowns so people can build much larger homes. The land is worth more than the homes until they can establish their historical value and protect them.

The only elitist aspect of the stairs is that it forces you to walk up it in a prescribed order like any skip step stair but not saving as much space.

I think the point about the comments is to try to get people to get over their pre-conceived notions of what things "should" be and see what they could be. 20 non-engineers and non-architects commenting on the structural and code issues of the stairs is a waste of time. The point is they look effortless and weightless and the commenters don't believe it can be real but it is. 10mm steel is just under half and inch. This is probably "safer" than the all glass stairs that most people have probably experienced at apple stores (and made it out alive)

I knew the fake flowers would spark a debate. In general I would probably say "Never!" to fakes, too. But then I saw these in person and really took to them. The fact that they are 90% branch and the flowers are only tight little buds really makes the illusion plausible.

At $6 per branch (that's 2 branches pictured) this is an incredibly economical alternative to fresh flowers for my family member in question who chases after 2 small kids all day. If she gets tired of yellow, she could try something else — even fresh cut stuff, which is why we invested in a good glass vase with real rocks that can totally be submerged.

To each his own. My client was thoroughly pleased!

Kayla here with a small clarification on the hanging:

The adhesives are circular "discs" of fabric with a hook attached - the disc glues to the bottom of each bowl and the hook hangs the bowl on the wall using a nail.

It seems to be a tradition in a lot of places but I think everyone's best guess is it originated in the south. Here are more New England examples and more discussion on the color and origin...

Sorry, I forgot to include the paint color. It's Caponata from Ben Moore's Affinity line. Deep, dark but really full of pigment and lovely in daylight and in the evening.

Glad to hear the makeover is getting the thumbs up (in general) and that people are making up their own minds regarding the books-by-color trend. Like I said up top, I love it but it just wasn't working for us anymore so we switched.

Those "phallic" things (ha ha ha) are an attempt at organic extrusions in clay by yours truly. They were actually intended to be little light fixtures but the project fell by the wayside. Clearly there's a reason I'm not a professional ceramicist ;-)

Both sets of curtains are by Anthropologie - I'm not sure the green ones are sold any longer; we got ours on clearance.

Thanks for the comments on moving the TV... it's got us thinking about alternatives. This just means the full before and after post is getting delayed...

Don't take design advice from a realtor. You just bought the house, your not trying to sell it.

I would tear the fake bricks out and paint the wall, then look at the whole picture again and decide if you need to paint or stain the cabinets.

We use the OXO pop container, I think the biggest one they have. It fits about 5 lbs of food and we store the rest in the bag in a closet. It is nice enough looking and seals really well while being really easy to open and shut. I would advise keeping the food in an at least somewhat sealed container as it goes stale just like any food left out and we had mice problems leaving it in the bag. Only $15...

I would keep the body color close in tone to what is now or go all white or pale grey with white trim. Do not paint the trim a color and do not add fake shutters. It looks like the steep of the mansard is cedar shakes which could be bleached and/or stained to give you more or less contrast with the body of the house. I would probably go darker to give some contrast but they might look really nice as is if the house was all white.

Looks like the door is already red which is fine but I would really consider ripping off and rethinking the little entry portico. It looks cheap and does not match the style of the house. The steps should be replaced with granite slabs similar to what is at the sidewalk.

A couple comments, based on the replies...

We stayed here and used the bathroom, it was very functional and would be way easier to clean than a normal bathroom. There are no corners, seams, or grout, anywhere. Corian is super easy to clean, not that we cleaned the bathroom but you could pretty much hose down the entire bathroom.

The pictures do everything to show the space... it is abstract space and a very small bathroom. The second picture is looking straight at the tub, hardly abstract photography.

The Kvartal system was very easy to install though it did require two people - one to hold the rails up while the other aligns and screws them into the ceiling. You'll need to buy the miter saw that is sold in the same area as the curtains (unless you own one) because the rail is cut down to the exact size of your space. This step is very simple - measure twice, cut once! I'd imagine this system would work beautifully no matter the length of the wall. The 6-panel expanse of our system is quite dramatic.

I did want to point out that in our space the curtains block very little light coming in from our "hidden" window - at the brightest time of the day, yes, you can see the shape of the window and a slight shadow of the things on the dresser but most of the day they are simply a floor to ceiling light filter. We would actually highly recommend them as window coverings when privacy is needed without sacrificing light.

The blue paint is Blue Echo from Ben Moore's Affinity line. It is a deep blue green (not slate as it may appear in one of the images).
