I personally like the cherry stone clams raw, and splashed with red wine vinegar with crushed red pepper flakes. It's super simple and incredibly addictive. My family will go through a cooler full of these at a gathering.

The house in the movie "Running with Scissors" is also pretty insane. Especially seeing as the movie is based on a true story.

I've never understood the need people seem to have for completely clear counters. Yes it can be irritating to have to move a mixer when it's in your way. but I'd find it a whole lot more irritating to have to beat egg whites for 20 minutes to make meringue. I have a postage stamp sized kitchen with almost no counter space whatsoever. Yet I happily coexist with a microwave, stand mixer, coffee maker, toaster oven, crock pot, blender, collection of cookbooks, & a big bowl of fruit on my counter at all times. If I need more space I move something.

P.S. I could do without the microwave but my cooking phobic roommate might starve.

To repel fruit flies mix 1 part vinegar and one part dish soap and place it in small bowls (shot glasses are perfect) around your kitchen. Within 1-3 days all the fruit flies will be gone.

This was on mythbusters. They proved it does happen with distilled water but tap water has enough additives in it to be safe.

I've never had the desire to make my own vinegar and so I'm curious what the benefits are. Does it taste better or is the appeal to have made it yourself?

Is there any risk of food contamination? I had a friend who nearly died of botulism after a failed attempt to make garlic infused olive oil. the experience gave me a new appreciation for pasturization.

if you disassemble the pomegranate underwater you can avoid getting most of the juice on your clothing. The seeds float right up to the top like cranberries.

We have a wholesale thrift store, which is a thrift store where everything is in huge troughs and sold by the pound. I walked out with a $22 set of copper saucepans, which I later found out are worth $1,800.

Thrift stores are like magic eye pictures. You have to unfocus your gaze and take everything in. I've found that the people who go there and "Never find anything" are trying to go in and find a specific item.

I used to live in an old house with this exact problem. Turns out it was an old parish house and the room is set up like this because this is the room they used to have wakes in (back when the body was on ice and they wanted the fire as far away as possible).

Our living room oblong and so we set the TV in the opposite corner from the fireplace. We then set 2 couches back to back in the center of the room. One couch and chair set faced the fireplace, and the other faced the TV. It was a very odd set up but it worked for my roomates and I.

I agree with nikkinnora, my roommate and I had a bookcase which we painted white and then arranged our shoes by color. I liked being able to show off shoes that I love but don't always get the opportunity to wear. As long as you keep it organized and mud free, it made the collection of shoes an artistic element rather than an eyesore.

My friends and I used to do this in college everytime there was a snow day we'd have a Snow B Q. We brought out a fire bowl and build couches from snow covering them with blankets. It was surprisingly comfortable. But then again minus the alcohol it would probably have been freezing.

This is beautiful but it reminds me of a hospital or a museum. I could never function in an enviroment this sterile. I think you can either go suoer white or super modern but the combination of the two is so unfriendly.

I live in a farmhouse from about 1850. We've been finding lost game pieces from the 30's. We can't figure out what games they'r from but one of the cards involves a monkey and a grouper which is apparently worth 30 points.

There's a brand of spray paint called Design Masters it's sold in craft stores. It's intended for spraying flowers so it's very low on chemicals. It's a flat finish s if you want any gloss you'd have to spray on Polycrylic which is an acrylic based coating, and also very low odor.

I lived with an amazing painter and silk screen artist who worked on large scale paintings (5'x5' at least). So instead of being stuck with boring white walls we weren't allowed to paint we had a mini gallery in every room.

Unfortunatly she was a nightmare to live with so my dream of having a home filled with art was dashed as I ran for the door.

I much prefer the liquid RIT dyes to the powder I've never had a problem with either but the liquid are much easier to mix a custom color. Although this selection is very nice you'd have to buy so much of it to dye anything large that you might as well just take the time to mix the cheaper dye yourself.

For me the smell of home is the smell of sauteeing garlic and onions and other generally pasta saucy smells. Not that I want my home to smell that all the time, that's just home.

I generally prefer cleaner floral smells like lavender and jasmine and cedar. for the rest of the time

Yet another post against germaphobes fretting over salmonella because i find it ridiculous. People lived for thousands of years without antibacterial soap and refrigeration. You'll all be fine. You're more likely to get salmonella from a vegetable than a chicken product. As for the really young thing I'm 23 supposedly part of this Lysol generation.

The only thing I use Lysol for is getting rid of the mold in paint that's been unused for a while. One capful per gallon. Easier than trying to match the paint you used in your living room 3 years ago.

if you're going to the craft store anyway just pick up the little discs they make for children's art projects they're all a uniform length and they come in a diverse number of sizes add that with a little brown paint thinned to a glaze and this project has gone from 10 hours to 2. and twhen you use the glaze it'll pick up the wood texture you'll never miss the bark (or the mold the will come in with it as a DIY)

Also this would be even more fun using stamped brass discs. Availible at Metailiferous and probably cheaper than the wood. http://www.metalliferous.com/images/BMC2125.pdf
