As someone with information intensive hobbies (cooking & brewing), and I'm finishing a PhD, and I also read a lot of nonfiction for pleasure, a large percentage of my books are reference books. I also worked at a library for a time. This also means that I revisit things frequently.

So, I keep books around for a purpose other than decoration, or simply to show "I read this once".

My wife and sister in law like to organize books this way. It drives me fucking crazy, and on a scale like the first pic, it looks ridiculous.

If you really want to do this, then just make your own book jackets and keep them in a functional order (of which there are several).

I know you said you don't want to paint hardwoods, but it seems like this would be one way to go about it:

1. put down a hardwood with an assertive grain to it, like hickory
2. stain it dark
3. put a thin coat of paint, or even a very light, opaque wood filler (the latter might be the most durable)
4. sand it to bring out the stain and grain
5. finish like normal.

I would get sample planks of your options and try some different techniques yourself.

steep them in vodka for a few weeks and then dump it all into a batch of homebrew in secondary. adds a level of complexity you can't get otherwise.

I brew and bake quite a bit as well, and I prefer the MyWeigh stainless scales because they do percentages, and you can get AC adapters for them. If you need to weigh stuff out at less than half an ounce, get a small scale for that stuff.

So I made the pizza crust. then I ate half the pizza. Then I farted for like 18 hours straight. Seriously. I'll be honest, the recipe needs some work, and you should take it very easy if you're not used to eating that much flax meal.
