Okay, then for those who argue that the size of this house negates its claims toward sustainability, I want to hear where you draw the line at "too large." What's the square foot maximum?
This is a conversation I actually am interested in, not in some snarky anonymous-internet-comment-war kind of way, but as someone who cares about design issues and has lived in both miniscule new york apartments and multi-bedroom homes. I'm uncomfortable with what I feel is the "size police," because who are we to decide what any one family needs to live comfortably? As someone who works out of my home, I've had to turn the guest bedroom into my metal studio, and I'm telling you right now I wish I had an extra room. I like having friends be able to stay with me when they are in town. Would an addition to my home get me the shaky-finger from some of you? See, I just think it's too subjective to say what's too big, what's just right. We have no idea how other people use their private space and why assume the worst? You think they have spare rooms filled with hummers?

For the sake of argument, how should a large house be built? Without any nods to environmentalism? Or is the problem just with the size of the house? I can't really get behind disdain for any and all large homes. There's no line that can be drawn at which point a person's space becomes "excessive," which would not be totally subjective. I'm not arguing FOR mega-mansions, nor do I think the above house even fits in that category. But, it's humbuggish to fault this home's size. I think the whole point is that we are trying to move in a general direction of environmental awareness. I think they did a great job.

I really like this cheerful home. It reminds me that, although there is some chatter about mid-century furniture having become ubiquitous or cliche, we can be grateful that these are perhaps new classics that bring charm and good design to many homes. I can't get enough of the George Nelson lamps, mostly because they give terrific glows to a room! Danish furniture is simple, attractive, and allows personal objects which fill them to shine.

I've refinished an 100-year-old chest in tung oil... darkblue is right in that you'll need to sand down any old varnish on your floors or the tung oil will not penetrate. You brush the oil on, rag off, and let it dry. (This takes a several hours if I remember) then you sand with a fine grit and reapply your oil. I did 4 coats on the chest, which was quite labor-intensive, but the woodworker I apprenticed for at the time said it would survive the bottom of the ocean with this application. Very water-tight, in other words. Beautiful, natural finish with a burnished look. It smells a little odd when using it but that does go away.

lots of stone-throwing going on here... i think the cfl/incandescent debate is rightfully more complicated than "choose cfl or you suck". if organic and local produce had inferior taste or quality to conventional produce, you'd see a lot of people teetering between the choice. similarly, i could choose to drive a prius, as it would certainly reduce my carbon-footprint, but i'm using the money i would have spent on that car to save for my daughter's college education, and buy groceries at whole foods. we should be able to speak frankly about these issues without worrying about judgement.

That purple couch against that ancient door is inspired! I love mid-century for its simplicity and purity, but this kind of moment is vibrant in spirit. Made me smile!

Looks like lots of fun, actually! Kind of surreal, like an ice-cave. With more imaginative furniture it would be a blast.
