I wouldn't take anything I see on the street now, because of the risk of bedbugs. Years ago I picked up 3 unframed watercolor paintings of scenes in Spain. At the time I hadn't been to Spain but now I have so I appreciate them more.

Got rid of the land line 3 years ago (but do have the old phone stored somewhere, a corded one as stated above because they work in power outages).

If people have their phone service turned off for non-payment, they can still dial 911. But if the account is totally canceled, then I am not sure if plugging in the phone and calling 911 would work.

On my cell phone bill I have two 911 charges or taxes - not sure why there are 2... but it is supposedly because if I dial 911 my location can be traced automatically. My old outdated cell phone couldn't even do this but at least the bill was lower.

that first comment is pretty harsh.

don't let the feng shui comments worry you.

my sister lived in China for over 10 years and she said real Chinese people think feng shui is BS.

Ikea also sells glassware holders that screw in under cabinets. They are around $5. They're white though not clear plastic.

didn't they also used to sell a small bench that matches these dressers? it had a shelf underneath and would have made a good shoe rack. it was always sold out also

the drivers don't want credit card machines because then all their income can be tracked and they won't be able to cheat on their taxes (like they can when they only take in cash)

most drivers don't own the cabs they're driving, and the cab owners have to foot the bill for the machines.

I was told that the cabs with flowers painted on them have the new credit card machines / GPS systems installed and that is how we can tell which cabs have it as of now...

wonder if that is true?

..oops sorry I guess I hit the submit button... I think these water-saving washers use the same amount of water as a dishwasher. These building rules about dishwashers being OK to have but not clothes washers are out of date. Maybe they are afraid some people will get gigantic washing machines that use 45 gallons of water.

It's easy to find the right kind of powdered soap these days, because so many people have front-loading machines now. Back in 1999 I had to get my detergent at Sears.

The Equator company used to make a small dishwasher that was about the size of a microwave and sat on the counter. It hooked up to the kitchen sink like my washer. It was $250. I didn't buy one, now it's no longer shown on their site. I wish I had it now.

Anyone ever use the cleaning products made by Seventh Generation? Does this dish washing detergent really work? I have to hand wash the dishes so I need something that really works.

Your kitchen is cute. I have the same cabinets in my rental apartment and I also like turquoise colored accents with it.

I bought one of these in 1999 and it's still going strong.

http://www.equatoronline.com

I am sure they must be a little different now though (mine is white and I had castors put on the bottom because I have to move it to the kitchen sink to use it).

Usually I don't use the dryer because it takes a while. Since this spins at 1000 RPMs in the spin cycle, the clothes are almost dry when they come out. So I put them on hangers in my shower, and drying racks.

I must have gotten the bigger of the two choices. Mine is ventless which means it does not need to be vented to the outside.

One time it did break down, my Martha Stewart bathmat's rubber backing disintegrated and clogged up the machine. The repairman drained the water and cleaned it out though. I only use cold water also, that is just my preference.

My downstairs neighbor prefers I do not run this late at night. This building is so old and he can hear my kitchen floor vibrating when it's in the spin cycle. Mostly that is because I have the castors on it. They're noisy. If I had it installed permanently (it can fit under a kitchen counter) that would not be a problem.

Also when the installer first brought it to my apartment, he hooked up the hoses to it - the one that goes from the back of the washer/dryer to the sink - and it turns out, it needed 2 washers not one! So, where the hose attaches to the machine - it needs 2 washers there. And also you need 2 washers for the spigot thing on the end of the hose, that snaps onto my kitchen faucet.

You can't go out while this is running. When the wash cycle ends you need to turn off your kitchen faucet. The pressure will really build up if you don't.

The exhaust hose is where the used water comes shooting out. I put that in my sink and duct tape it down - Scotch tape isn't enough - believe me ;-) The water comes shooting out so fast so your sink has to be deep enough. My kitchen sink is just a standard sink and it's fine. A bathroom sink would be too small I imagine.

Back when I bought this it was $950. A local appliance store let me buy it on layaway.

if the person with the question is a woman, I'd say how about an antique or old dress maker's dummy? you could put your bathrobe on it or something nice.

I saw one once in a junk shop and didn't get it, still kicking myself....

once i was walking on ludlow street in nyc, there was a discarded mattress on the sidewalk. 4 young women who were walking in front of me started jumping up and down on it and giggling and i yelled 'nooooo stop!! it mught have bedbugs!!' but they continued to laugh and frolic ...

how about this. i need a new mattress. i am worried about something i read. when you buy a mattress the delivery people remove old bedding, and take it away. so there is old bedding in the truck very close to the new bedding. the new pieces are usually wrapped in plastic. if a bug had jumped onto it, would i be able to spot it? mayor bloomberg wanted to make a rule that old bedding cannot be in the same truck as new bedding. but i don't think it passed. and i don't live in nyc anyway.

to the person who said the ventless washer/dryer combo isn't green - that's incorrect. they use a smaller amount of water than any other washer - some states even offer rebates to the buyers for that reason. and mine has a high energy efficiency rating.

the laundry service where i live doesn't even use soap! yuck

She had to put the washer/dryer where it is because that is where the existing water hook-ups are.

I have one of these same washer/dryers and I'd rather have it, than a dishwasher any day! I first saw them 11 years ago when I was in Ireland. I've also been to the UK many times and people usually have them in the kitchen. (Most people I know in England and Scotland don't even have a dishwasher)

Love the fact that you have a baby grand piano too.
