You don't need a bread machine to bake bread. I bake all of our bread, mostly using Mark Bittman's no-knead recipe from the NYTimes a couple of years ago. I think there was a thread on this in the Kitchen part of this website last year.

I haven't run the numbers, but flour (I use whole wheat plus bread), yeast, and salt are cheap. But beyond the savings, it tastes much better than even high-end bakery loaves.

Cooking at home in general is a big money saver and more healthy. Make enough to take a brown-bag lunch to work, increasing the savings. And the more you cook, the easier it becomes--your pantry is stocked, and the process isn't daunting.

After reading about it on this site (IIRC), I tried World's Best. A while afterward, one or both of our cats started to pee outside the box(es) (not on rugs or furniture, thank goodness, on the floor of the unfinished basement where the litter boxes are). Not all the time, but there is no tolerable level of this!

I'm still not sure what caused it--ironically, we had FINALLY started a much-needed Cure on the basement, so they might have just been "enjoying" the additional floor space. We were also out of town more than usual.

A visit to the vet ruled out medical issues, and after some desperate online research we discovered Cat Attract litter. We just implemented the new program last week (new and more boxes--four now for two cats; Feliway plug-in, and Cat Attract) and so far, so good. The Cat Attract really seems to work--the box with that gets by far the most use now. Fingers crossed!

J-fer Rose, I'm so glad Framers' Workroom worked out for you! It's one of the best unsung resources in DC, IMO.

In addition to the DIY, which I always do, it's always worth checking out the frames they make themselves from leftover molding. These are huge bargains.

Farrow and Ball's Off White and Old White are beautiful, with a lovely depth of color. I have also used Stone White on the trim in a bathroom with black and white tile, but it's quite green.

J-Fer Rose,

I second the rec on Framers' Workroom. I am very fussy about frames and mats--my parents used to own a framing shop--and they have a great selection of moldings as well as helpful staff. The DIY option can save you a bit of $, too.
