My favorite tip for traveling lightly (in the US for US folks) is for the return trip. The day before you head back home, swing by the US Post Office, and get one of those "If It Fits, It Ships" boxes large enough to hold most of your dirty laundry. Shove your filthies into the box, and mail it to your home. Your laundry will arrive in a few days, and you take it straight to the washer. And now your luggage has LOTS of room for new clothes, souvenirs, gifts, ...

Brush the sliced halloumi with olive oil. I like the sliced to be about 1/4" thick for this.
Grill until browned, about 2 minutes per side.
Top slices with a drizzle of olive oil, sliced red bell pepper, toasted pine nuts and basil.

I also like halloumi grilled, then drizzled with lemon juice, and some chopped fresh mint.

French Press, Turkish, and other non-paper-filtered brewing methods still have large amounts of cafestol, which stimulates LDL cholesterol (the "bad" kind) levels. Espresso has less cafestol than those more direct brewing methods, but less than paper filtering. If you are using a metal mesh filter, you may be getting more cafestol than you think.

Paper filters = good for your LDL cholesterol number, not so good for the waste stream. :-p

A local garden center collects the empty plastic kcups and uses them to start seeds. Still not quite as eco friendly as they might be, but at least there is one more use before they directly hit the waste stream.

The nice Irish man (RIP) who helped me learn about scotch whisky and Irish whiskey used the seasons as a metaphor when tasting new ones. Islay scotches would be considered winter (as you gather around a fire), and some Highland and Speyside offerings would be spring or summer.

@twnt1andcounting, a sunnier scotch that should be widely distributed is The Macallan 12 year old. Very little peat/smoke, but spicy, toffee, citrus, floral, and dried fruit flavors. A little searching will turn up images of something Macallan calls a spider diagram, which is a sort of tasting wheel for whisky.

Oban 14yo is considered by my local whisky bar's manager to be a "gateway" scotch to those who are just venturing into the world of peaty/smokey scotch.

Or choose one of the "sunnier" single malts from the Highland, Lowland, Speyside, or Campbeltown regions, and keep the Islay whisky for someone who already likes scotch. ;-)

For the carbonara, if you add a little of the pasta water slowly to the egg mixture, you won't end up with scrambled eggs. A splash of half 'n' half in the egg mixture isn't canon, but can be tasty.

clean one pound of Brussels Sprouts, and cut the big ones in half or thirds (you're trying to make them all about the same size).
bring a few quarts of water to a rolling boil, then dunk the sprouts in for 3-4 minutes, then scoop them into a colander and rinse them under cold water (or dunk them in an ice bath, if you are so inclined). let them drip dry for a little while, giving them a shake now and again, to remove more water.
Slice a couple medium shallots very thinly while you wait.
Saute the shallots over high heat, using clarified butter. Once they start to caramelize, add the sprouts, and don't be afraid to let things get browned.
Add a spoonful or so of the chili garlic sauce, and little more butter.
Plate everything, pouring the pan sauce over the goodness, and you can hit it with a little lime juice, if you want.

have lots of forks ready, because this will stop conversations while it lasts.

Pardon the correction, but your link points to A Timeless Way of Building by that Alexander, not the book A Pattern Language, which is the book you mention in this post. Most people tend to find the actual patterns (in APL) far more interesting than the notions behind them.

The patterns for gathering in small groups, seating, and nooks will also explain much about why we find a given kitchen comfy or not.

Choco milk has more electrolytes than most other fluid-replacement "remedies", which is why some of the hungover folks may appreciate it.

@bakingstone, and there are more than 180 studies that are directly associated with or have been funded by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. ;-)

That choco milk study looked at post-exercise recovery for endurance athletes performing multiple workouts per day. The sample size and methods were similar other peer-reviewed exercise nutrition studies. There are many other peer-reviewed, published studies examining milk and its efficacy on exercise and athletes --- skim milk is seen as a more effective post-resistance-exercise lean-muscle builder than some soy-based product, for example. Not all of those researchers took money from a dairy council.

The science in the report was sound. Grocery store brand low-fat choco milk has similar nutritional characteristics as both Fluid Replacement exercise drinks (e.g., Gatorade) and Carbo Replacement exercise drinks (e.g., Endurox), and has similar exercise recovery benefits. The study found choco milk to be just as good as these others, not better, and hence is a viable alternative to them. I agree the mass media can't report science accurately, over-hyped these results, and takes money from the NDC.

Disclaimer: I have read the earlier, non-NDC funded chocolate milk studies that same research group did with high-school swimmers doing two-a-days, which had similar conclusions.
