Amen, allisonharris!!

Talented builders, yes, inspired and inspiring designers, absolutely. Architects? NO.

Bluntly--it's easier in the US to become a doctor or a lawyer than it is to become an architect. I spent 7 years in college, interned for another three, and I've been working in the field for over 10 years. But until I pass my seven-part, $1,500 exam it is illegal for me to call myself an architect. (Don't even get me started on so-called "software architects".)

Simply the fact that "these men don't worry about [construction] codes and laws" takes them out of the realm of architect, and shame on the filmmaker for titling them so.

Oh, I'm so torn on this one! I live in Chicago, and on one hand, I think it'll be great publicity for the city and will definitely bump up my industry (architecture).

On the other, I trust Richard "let's bulldoze Meigs Field at 1 a.m." Daley, his cronies, and the Chicago construction hegemony NOT at all, and I'm 100% certain that this will be another financial debacle like Millennium Park (300% over budget and 4 years late), and the taxpayers will get stuck with the bill AGAIN. For temporary buildings!

Also, I had friends in Atlanta at the time of their games, and they were in gridlock purgatory for two weeks. If it comes to Chi-town I'll probably be renting out my apartment and getting the heck out of Dodge.

"Hello, my name is rockypondgirl and I am an IKEA-holic." That said, if Dania or DWR ever offers bookcases for $80, I'm there. (Sweet place, Jess!)

Awesome! I would kill for a place like this. Wish I could see the kitchen.

Let's see. Assume 5 people, $10 mil including renovations, and 7,200 sf. That's 1,440 sf and $2 mil per person.

Natalya, would you adopt me please? I promise I'll take less than 10% of your space. I will want to bring in some books and more homey furnishings, though, but just for my part--you can keep the beige and white stuff everywhere else. Oh, and don't worry about the vast waste of resources--I'm sure the money you've made justifies whatever you want to do to the planet. "Live and let live" as someone remarked above.

Wow.

I could get behind this as a concept if it were even remotely well-executed (e.g. using ONLY balls, even mortar joints, possibly double-sided, with some attention to the color scheme), but I gotta agree with most of the posters above: this is a train wreck.

Amen, bepsf. Anyone with an IKEA kitchen has frameless cabinets. Nothing new.

What a shame. Looks like it's got vents on the top and sides that can't be blocked, so that rules out making a cabinet to "hide" it.

The large fireplace screen idea might work, but really, I'm with whoever said disconnect it, store it, and use space heaters.

Please let us all know what you end up doing!!

I miss the days when TOH was a DIY show about homeowners working on THEIR OLD houses, and not contractors working on posh renos for the well-heeled.

That said, I still watch it obsessively, and I have a wee crush on Kevin. :)

If you didn't tell me they were "hide" shaped I would think they were odd Rorschach test patterns. Come to think of it, THAT would be kinda cool.

Yep! Hannaleighh is right--you can totally see the underside of the top tread. BUSTED, Living, Etc.! Hee!

I like the wallpaper idea (or highlighting risers in general), but wouldn't use it for my main stairs--risers get lots of scuffing and dings, and it would be such a shame to gunk up that pretty paper.

I'm one of the luckiest people in the world, apparently! I've got a super-clean laundry room with 4w/4d at 50-cents each for a building of 28 units (I think that's one set for every 7 people). Most times I can do ALL my laundry in 2 hours. There are also lockers for your detergent, drying lines, and generous folding tables. But the best part is (drum roll please)... TIMERS ON THE MACHINES (and a clock on the wall).

Also, the building provides 1-2 plastic baskets so that you can take others' laundry out if they've missed their "pick-up" time. If I didn't have to go outside to get to it (courtyard building), it would be heaven on a stick. But seriously, having a nice place to do laundry makes such a difference, and indicates a decent landlord/manager in my book.

So, is it from the "American traditions in craftsmanship," or the "non-American influences" that the Benchwright Buffet gets its "we've never heard of a jointer or a plane" appearance?

I admit I don't know a lot about early American (read: 18th- 19th-century) furniture, but my sense is that those artisans would prize the satiny-smooth finishes they worked so hard for over clunky dings and dents PB is touting as evidence of "hand crafting". Bet those dents are made by machine, too. Bah.

I'm with blueyes: find real antiques instead.
