For those who are comfy working in bed or on a sofa, do please be careful about your back. It can feel comfortable for years and years....while gradually doing cumulative damage to your back that can hit you when you least expect it. Even if it feels good NOW, it doesn't mean it's not doing you harm. In my 20s, I pooh-pooh'ed the importance of decent posture, good office chairs... and I later paid the price: 10 years of always- uncomfortable, sometimes crippling back pain. Wish I'd known better. That glass of wine would have been just as nice at an actual desk, with an actual desk chair.

fergmelk -- just read through the instructions. How crazy! Have you tried this yourself? If so, how well did you feel it worked? Did the rug need to hung dry afterwards? Any gut feeling about whether this would work well for thick felted (gnarled fiber) rug, not just standard pile rugs? TIA!

fergmelk -- thanks for the link, I'll check it out. And yes, I've got a good supply of snow these days.... : )

Sounds like you made a lot of smart decisions along the way! The rug looks like felted wool -- possibly the same C&B or PB one I've got. Have you had any luck with cleaning it? Every pine needle that makes it into our house tends to end up embedded in it, and I'm not sure what I can do to get a few yrs of accumulated grime out of the white wool that won't mess it up. Tips would be welcomed!

Funny about the green. A generally smart publisher I used to work with told us at a design meeting that green covers tended not to sell as well as other colors. We always shied away from green-based cover designs after that (the pub was right about most things she told us, so we took this advice, too). Wonder if the same thing applies in other packaging? Will pay attention next time I'm at the grocery store.

Does anyone know a source for metal lampshade frames like these?

With a slightly wider base, that chopstick holder would be great-looking as a rack for file folders!

my fridge came with instructions about specifically avoiding anything acidic -- like the white vinegar and lemon juice succestions above -- since that could damage the surface. Not sure that advice applies to ALL s.s. appliances, but worth checking your owners manual before testing those approaches!

I was surprised yrs ago to see Wedgwood's majolica line. Victorian majolica was exuberant, and -- gotta say it -- often tacky. Wedgwood's tended to be more refined, but still exuberant and quirky and bright. You'll see lots of lovely solid-green leaf plates if you google Wedgwood majolica, but that's not all they did. Here are a few quick links:

If anything, Wedgwood majolica suffers for being a little "timid" about embracing the exuberance of najolica, and sometimes being too prim/fussy. It's worth googling "George Jones majolica" to see one of the other highest-end makers of the genre -- his work has a wit, crispness, and modernity that makes it age better, I think.

As much as I sympathize with the disinclination to call an exterminator, both save money and to avoid pesticides, don't rule it out if these other solutions don't work. Carpenter ants are a big problem for a house, and they're not always hiding out in a place where it's easy to find them. They love water, so anyplace that's damp apparently can become a colony (dripping pipe inside a wall? imperfect flashing under your roof?)....and then they go to work on your beams and joists. If the tips other folks gave don't solve your problem, don't just sigh and live with it... call in the pros. At least they can figure out if it's carpenter ants you're dealing with, and try to locate them before an expensive problem becomes a REALLY expensive problem! Signed, just spent $5K to rip out a deck, the walls of the room below it, the leaky flashing and roof between them....

p.s. Apparently one way of confirming that you have carpenter ants is to check out any stray spiderwebs in your basement. If there are antheads left there, you've got carpenter ants. Their heads and jaws are too tough for Spidey to gobble up, so there they stay... like something from an insect version of Apocalypse Now!

Drat. I'm a regular AT reader, and was psyched to see a name I recognized... and excited that name was an illustrator whose work I'd just helped to publish. After I posted, I saw the post about self promotion.... and now *I'll* just sound like a terrible self-promoter myself. : ( Didn't mean to. If anything, I wanted to just congratulate Jenn on her books. Nice work!

Jenn Ski! I knew I recognized your name! I work at innovative kids, and we published your books! LOVE your artwork for the Soft Shapes series -- really charming. We just had all the front covers hanging up on the conference room wall for a meeting, and they looked so great -- eye-catching, and fresh. : ) The farm animals in "Animals" and the blue bird in "Counting" just crack me up. For emergency pumping help, call your local fire department's non-emergency number. In my town (an NYC burb), they come out with massive pumps and help flooded residents.
