Just to respond to RodgerPM and LizzyC, I'd reiterate that five years ago, there was VERY little on Division above 39th. Kalga Cafe and Food Fight, yes. Much else, no.

It's only been recently that we've seen places like Ease and Pizzicato and North and Petite Provence all start cropping up.

My point was that, even though it's just been in the last five years that there's been real growth above 39th and Division, I could predict that it was coming. And clearly so could all of you!

As someone who thrifts multiple times a week, I have to say that the last two weeks have been the absolute worst thrifting that I've seen in months.

I think the reasoning above is right, but it hasn't translated well to Portland's stores. A whole lot of nothing, at the moment.

FreeStyle! The only one that I record...and lots of people in their 30s with small homes and apartments.

I got the Angela Adams Islands rug (in blue) for about $300, which was 60% off the original price. There was nothing wrong with it; the store had just opted to discontinue selling her stuff. Worked out well for me!

I have the pear above and Amuny-Dey's green apple sitting on my desk... They were simple postcards that I picked up at Velocity and popped into white Target frames.

For less than $5, I now have some really adorable desktop art!

Am I missing something? Are the directions not visible above? If you need greater clarity, I'd check out the video and/or the complete set of photos on the Neighborhood Notes site...

It looks big (granted, it is a full-length closet, not a coat closet), but I assure you that it's not very deep.

And the window has been there as long as I can remember, but I'm betting that it was installed when the closet was converted to an office...I doubt it was in the closet to begin with. That would be REALLY unusual!

I second the importance of being prepared at work. We spend a lot of time in our offices and it's just about as likely that when disaster strikes, we'll be there instead of at home.

I work for the Red Cross and am lucky enough to have a 10-person disaster kit under my desk. But if you're looking to take just a teensy step towards being ready, you might consider the $5 safety tube, which can be dropped under a workspace (or in a glovebox or just about anywhere).

See it for yourself here:

[On a side note, our little chapter here in Portland invented the safety tube, which later went on to be featured in MOMA's SAFE: Design Takes On Risk exhibit in 2005: http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/2005/safe.html
This was way before my time, but I do think it's pretty darned cool.]

My trip took me to Detroit -- the Europe of the Midwest.

There's something about showering sitting down (or squatting, which sounds worse) that leads me to believe you're just not getting all the soap off. It feels like you HAVE to stand up and really rinse at some point!

moptop, I was driving out McLoughlin/99E yesterday and thought the trees overhanging highway (near the Eastmoreland Golf Course) were stunning. Surprisingly, there's also some incredibly firey reds in the parking lot of Con-way in NW Portland.

Inspiration can come in the strangest of places!

I live kitty-corner from one of Portland's many parks. It's great for dog-walking, tennis and free movies in the summer!

In Portland, check out Periodicals Paradise in the Hollywood neighborhood. Tons of vintage and new(er) magazines at bargain prices.

It was actually on sale at Target. The lamp came in both green and dark purple, but it's no longer available. There is this one, however:

Amiencc -- If I was the one who used "blown away" in two different posts, I apologize for my laziness. If it was someone else who used it...well, as much as I try to read all the AT posts, I can't always keep track of all the other writers' commentary. I CAN say that, in this case, I definitely was blown away, and that I'd only use the expression if it was really the case. Honest.

FYI that while Oregon isn't immune to mosquitoes, we have decidedly fewer out in this part of the country. Problem, yes...but maybe not as much as elsewhere.

nerli315 -- Quite honestly, it caught my eye when I was walking around the neighborhood. And, from the comments, it looks like it would have caught most of your eyes as well.

Like it or not, it's a pretty unique piece and I was surprised to find it pop up in so many other places...even in a decor mag. So for the Look! items (which are all things we spot while out and about), it seemed worthy of posting for others to review themselves.
