My sister and I had the same problem with the shades we bought for my nieces room. The shade would lean with or without the extra piece. My boyfriend and I live with my small dog in a 600 sq ft studio. We have high ceilings as well and it really helps not to feel cramped. It is too bad they didn't put an over hang on that counter so you could have barstools. We use a book case to divide the bed from the living space. Also, invest in a good pair of head phones. It is the only way to deal with one person wanting to stay up and watch t.v. and the other person wanting to sleep. I think the bose headphones saved our relationship!
