Don't try to carve the turkey on a crowded table with everyone watching. Present the perfectly roasted fowl to the guests, collect your 'oohs' and 'aahs,' then whisk it back to the kitchen or a sideboard for butchering. If you're really clever you can enlist your tea trolley or bar cart to wheel around the table, carving to order at each guest's place.

This is a beautiful refresh and update that maintains the vintage character of the piece. Thanks for showing how it can be done without white paint!

I hate the look of chipping painted furniture. Lightly sanding for good adhesion before applying two light coats of spray B.I.N. primer will make ordinary latex paint stick to just about anything. I either add some water-based poly to my paint (less than 20%), which then requires at least three coats, or I top two coats of undiluted paint with a few coats of spray sealant - these methods work great with matte poly if you need to match a flat finish. The biggest mistake people make when painting furniture is to assume that good results can be achieved quickly and easily in one afternoon; it takes ample preparation, multiple products, good technique and a couple of days to achieve a long-lasting professional looking finish on furnishings like shelves that will see any amount of wear.

As with many other human talents and abilities, some people have a natural affinity for recognizing and balancing colours, others can be educated to varying levels of expertise, and some few never quite get it no matter how it is explained to them. I have known people who insisted that all shadows are grey no matter what colour they fall upon. Design professionals (who may start off in the talented group any way) typically spend a lot of time studying how colour works and it's one reason why their solutions with colour tend to be more successful and polished than DIYers, IMO.

Ok I like this place for its commitment to and vigorous execution of the 'theme,' but can anyone please explain why there is crockery absolutely everywhere? It's on the walls, in the cupboards, on bookshelves and side tables, even on the floor under a chair! I've been in many a country house and never seen so widespread a display of decorative dishes and vessels outside of the kitchen and dining areas.

I don't want to feel 'at home' when I'm in an hotel! I want to feel as though I'm in someone else's comfortable, luxurious home where all of the picayune details of my personal care and entertainment will be attended to by invisible cat-footed staff. Obviously none of that would be happening in the digs pictured here.

The colour design is cleanly executed, but this looks exactly like an advertising agency from the '90s to me (the brushed stainless logo goes on the charteuse wall). Are we bringing that 'stripped-down memphis' look back again already?

Lots more info and description than usual in this question and I'm sure you will get very helpful advice from commenters here. Here's mine: the busy floral rugs you favour will send the room in a decidedly 'cottagey' direction which is completely at odds with your existing MCM style upholstery pieces. That would be a difficult fence to straddle. The only rug that works, IMO is the rectangular colour-block one (Crate & Barrel?). If that is to be your major textile, choose your palette from those colours. Also, keep scale and height in mind; everything in the room now is low and nothing has an important scale.

Wow, this place has been beaten hard with a big 80's stick! It's a bit shocking to see such dowdy, traditionalist interiors in such an intrinsically forward-looking structure. Perhaps it looked contemporary and fresh when it was built, but now it looks really dated and sad.

You don't need decor advice to deal with this; you need renovation advice from a skilled and creative architect who can re-imagine the space for you in a way that works with the way you want to live. No amount of painting, flooring, stripping, or furnishing will overcome the intellectual challenge of updating the lifestyle choices that you have inherited with this design.

There's a lot more chintz than I would have expected, having seen YSL and Bergé's Paris apartment and their other villa in Marrakech. But I love how they have allowed some rooms, such as the porch with its rattan furniture and the pink sitting room with the green establishments, to remain relatively unadorned and more in keeping with local vernacular to give a strong sense of place.

This place looks great - chic and comfortable. My only complaint would be that I wish the design were as adventuresome with colour as it is with texture. The orange bathroom is the only thing that saves the space from total greigiosity.

Anything can be made to work. The really critical factor will be whether you are willing to do whatever else is necessary in the room to achieve the look you want. If your wall colour and trim colour are both quite dark, is an overall sombre effect one you will enjoy? If it looks as if the room will need a white or bright carpet, is that practical for your lifestyle? Do you want the furniture to stand out or to recede? Where are the focal points and what are the accents in your design? Going with a more conventional paint scheme might make such questions easier to answer, but choosing an unconventional scheme might also make the answers more interesting.
