Hide That Remote! 5 Pretty Storage Boxes

It looks like the actual Marimekko store will have a wider selection than C&B does - it's a small part of CB's collection, as opposed to their whole store. Also, CB doesn't sell fabric online, only in-store, and they have a pretty limited selection that varies seasonally.

Honestly, I find this a little offensive. Fine, I know I can spend $5000 on a really great sofa that will last for a long time. But I make $25000 a year (less taxes). So no, I'm not going to spend 20% of my yearly budget on a sofa, no matter how high-quality and responsible its manufacturing practice. And that's fine, I don't mind SEEING those things on Apartment Therapy...but to be told that I'm irresponsible for not "saving up" for that feels pretty off-putting. I've always thought of AT as a place that supports those of us who can't afford those things - that might offer us alternatives, not lectures. My bad.

Ha! I did this last week and everyone thought I was crazy. (Benches are expensive, and I had two perfectly good kitchen chairs that I was about to throw out and a long finished board, so...free.) Now I can point to this article and show that my thought has been AT-validated!

it seemed like you were objecting to boy shorts on the grounds of their not being cute!

man, tell me about it. i live in a building where we share a balcony (fire escape!) with our neighbors - college students. not only do they often have parties laaaaaaate into the night (on weekdays), but i've been finding cigarette butts in my potted plants out there :-/

oh yes, i hate people who just show up with less money than they promised. that's just bad form and gives hagglers everywhere a bad name. i didn't mean to attack you per se, it's just that people on CL don't seem to realize that if they DON'T say firm, they are setting themselves up for some bargaining!

Shopping Tips: How & When to Haggle

borage - if the price is firm, you should put "firm"! i hate when i make a lower offer for something on craigslist and the seller gets offended. it's CRAIGSLIST, not christie's.

ditto for "best offer" option on ebay - if you actually want people to make you an offer, don't get genuinely offended when it's lower than you want! THAT'S WHAT NEGOTIATION IS FOR.

i mean, i HATE haggling. but part of why i hate it is that people (in the US? i wouldn't know if this is different elsewhere, but i'm tempted to make the generalization that it is) often are personally affronted by it, even when they are working in a venue that implicitly or explicitly requires or promotes haggling.

nate f, i think you're right, and what you said needed to be said. BUT, your analogy is faulty. you're describing a situation where someone misuses/wastes a diminishing resource in a way which permanently dissolves it. that would be appropriate if, for example, her question was "hey guys, i really like the way mid-century nightstands burn, do you think it would be cool if i used this to build a fire?" she is going to use this piece of furniture as a piece of furniture; she's just thinking of modifying it in a (possibly less than ideal) way first. a better analogy would be something like, someone who puts a shot of espresso into one of the last cans of 7up before drinking it.

i don't think you should paint, btw, emma. the piece has great detail already - i think adding herringbone and contrasting colors would be a bit overwhelming.

i was so excited because i thought it was functional as a bucket - like, a storage ottoman. how amazing would that be?? i was imagining a bucket that you could keep, like, cat litter in, but it would look pretty. but no, they're just using the bucket as a form. still cool - just not as cool as i thought. disappointed face.

I actually thought that for most people buying "made in usa" had more to do with ethical labor sourcing. The US has labor guidelines and restrictions (minimum wage! breaks!) that many other countries don't have - which is exactly why companies outsource production.
