I love to use lemons & limes for a lot of these things, but the recent price spike is a killer-$1 for one lemon! Wow!

I've used white vinegar as fabric softener in my front loader for years. I keep a bottle to which I've added a few drops of old fashioned "bluing" to add to whites. It works even in my hardest of well water. I still use Calgon liquid water softener in the wash load, but will now replace it with baking soda-thanks!

I had tried everything green & not to clean my shower stall. I live in the country & had yrs of hard water build up with soap scum. Yucky, I know. I had such terrific luck with Lysol "power"toilet bowl cleaner in the goose-necked bottle cleaning 30 yrs of rust buildup from the toilet bowl, that I thought I'd try it on the shower. It is amazing! The tiles & grout are like new, no exaggeration. I donned heavy rubber gloves & safety glasses & squirted it all over & spread it with one of those scotch brite telescoping scrubber things. I let it sit for a couple of hrs, scrubbed it again & that was it. It even did the glass of the door. Now I use it every few mos. for maintenance.

Had to order this at my wine merchant & haven't picked it up yet. Sounds great. Found St Germain's website with lots of drink recipes. It's really pricey. The elderflower yogurt sounds delish.

Thanks, Lee, for the most informative comments. One question, is it true that you & other maple syrup producers have to use formaldehyde pellets in the tree spigot to keep it running freely? I've heard that it is outlawed in Canada. What say you on this? For the record, I've done the "master cleanse" many times in my life & it is appalling what your body releases during the fast. The amazing thing is that you have boundless energy, since digestion is the #1 energy sapper of your body. You also have all the time freed up from planning, shopping, preparing & serving meals for the time you're on the fast! Don't plan on lasting weight loss, however, you go back quickly to the pre-fast level.

art should think of almost all the soy based products on the market, as well. ADM, Archer Daniels Midland is the largest producer of GMO soy. As Lesley says, the trouble with GMO plants is that they cross-pollinate with non-GMO strains & corrupt them. "Vive la France", I say, for having the balls to stand up to agri-business and its total disregard for our health & the future of plantlife.

I have a pretty comprehensive vegetarian cookbook library & agree with ilovebutter, although I use the original "Moosewood" far more than any of its sequels. I would add "The Passionate Vegetarian" by Dragonwagon, "Roger Vergé's Vegetables in the French Style", "Simply Heavenly" by Abbot George Burke, "the Bold Vegetarian Chef" by Ken Charney and my all-time fave: "Cabbagetown Cafe Cookbook" by Julie Jordan. The only one of the ones mentioned in the blog I've owned is "The Vegetarian Epicure", which I donated to a book sale because I never used a recipe from it.

Re maple syrup-just remembered a funny anecdote about it. On a ski trip to Vt. one winter, my then BF & I saw a sign for maple syrup, which led us down a back road ending at another with no sign as to which way to go. We guessed left & drove a considerable distance when we spotted it, a sign for the golden prize! We stepped into the little shanty which was filled with nice orderly rows of cans & bottles of the stuff; lots of it. After a bit of a wait, the farmer, with a surprised look on his face, came in & asked how we found the place! We could hardly contain the laughter & when we got back to the car with our purchases absolutely howled with hysteria! Those old New Englanders-gotta love 'em.

Sorry to disagree with the pack, but living as I do in a big maple producing area (c'mon up, this weekend is sugaring off time with al the farms open and many other neat events. Go to www.mapleweekend.com.)
Anyhow, sparkling light fancy grade A maple syrup is a real treasure. Comparing it to the lower grades is kind of like comparing NY state sparkling wine to that produced in the champagne region of France. The light has a really pure maple taste, perhaps undiscernable to those used to the in your face fake maple flavors used in things like Log Cabin or Mrs Butterworth's. It certainly is not for cooking. Use it to enhance a bowl of real vanilla ice cream or pour atop a stack of pancakes. There's a reason it's so much more expensive than the rest-less is produced. It's from the 1st sap run. I plan to cococt a maple & Ciroc cocktail this week-end. How bad could that be?

The last one I got took forever to get here. Netflix gave me the lame excuse that they didn't have it anywhere near me & had to send it across country. By pony express, I think!

Duh, I never thought not to! As a kid, the whole stalk was sliced along with some of the florets. My dog adores the raw stalks, will eat one each day if I let him. Realized I was spending about a dollar a day on them, so have cut back a bit!

What a wonderful idea! I adore radishes, esp. "french breakfast" ones. I buy my seeds in Paris because they seem to germinate & grow faster than domestic ones. BHV has them. Union Square greenmarket always has an amazing selection in spring. The long shape is easier to butter, too. For me, fleur de sel is the only salt to use on these gems.

To me, the most important thing to notice about olive or any oils is that they smell fresh, not rancid. I've found TJ Maxx to be a great source for many kinds of oils, imported & domestic. When you open the bottle, take a big sniff, and if there is the least hint of rancidity, return it! Keep all oils in a cool spot & out of the light.
