why bother holding onto things? move on and forget about it. most things I keep are utilitarian, like kitchen utensils, towels, etc. and they never make me thing of who gave them to me. besides, a lot ended up being burned in the bar-b-que pit. love letters from someone who cheated? please! burn them.

Charlotte - Roots and Rafters just to let you know, that as an engineer myself, structural engineers do not inspect siding. Environmental companies handle that type of work, but not all deal with asbestos. It helps to call around to find one that does.

I live in the 5th largest city in the US, and grew up in the middle of nowhere. I mean the nearest grocery was 5 miles from me. I pick the city hands down, even with crime. Nothing to do out in nowhere. Watching birds, picking up sticks in the yard, and driving driving driving for EVERYTHING. Plus, so many people not of my political persuasion. Forget it.

I think the ideal situation is a mix: a small, cool, safe city that is large enough to have happening things going on but also is close to natural areas.

Regular old fashioned coca cola. Not diet, not anything, just plain old coke. The boys in the South told me about that one, and it helps a lot. In fact, that's what it was designed for.

Good to know that a rabbit's life is worth something to capitalists. Really disgusting.

I understand the points already made. I run my business from home, consulting engineering. It can be great, no distractions, get a lot more done, can get errands done during the day when everyone is at work then just put in the time later. Downside, I feel like I am always on the clock (hard to relax on weekends when there is work waiting in the next room) and isolation. That is a big one. I feel like I am working in a bubble and know of nothing else going on in the industry, do not get feedback from others, miss out on little helpful tidbits of information that get acquired from interactions with others, plus the feeling of not existing anymore. Also, I would kill for a computer support department.

I had a landlord who I liked very much, for some reason, despite the fact that I was home sick one day and caught him creeping into people's apartments unannounced. Funny thing is, I would find odd things missing. Like a hair brush or grocery bags I stored under my range in the cabinet. Just weird. Since that time on, I never kept anything valuable, important, or telling laying around. I stayed because rent was ridiuculously cheap but bought a house. Will never rent again, never.

@Earthy Crunchy thanks for your input. $70/sf seems reasonable, $150/sf seems high. I have worked on large commercial projects in the city for the that much. Also, it seems high considering the sparse finishes and treatments. There is a group here in Phillly called Postgreen, and they tried to build a row home sized LEED home for 100k. I think it cost a little more, but the finishes were similar to this house.

Really nice house, just what I would build for myself. I am curious about square foot construction costs. I have always thought that by keeping it small and simple, a new modern style home would be attainable. I mean attainable for an average working shmoe like me. Any data that you care to share?
