I agree about using a potted house plant as an alternative to cut flowers, too. We've had the same little African violet for nearly a decade. It's easy to care for and the blooms are a beautiful magenta color and last for a LONG time. I think we paid $3.

I definitely agree about a bowl of fruit being a good alternative to flowers, whether you are a pet owner or not. I love fresh flowers, but I usually have them around in the spring/summer/fall when I can cut them from my own garden. In the winter, I usually put a cheery bowl of bright clementines (or whatever fruit is on sale) on our dining room table (which I pass by often). It serves as both decoration and sustenance!

Thank you for all the inspiration, everyone!

Oh, sorry, you asked about TV show inspiration, not movies. Loved Brenda's house in Six Feet Under.

We love these glasses and use them all the time. I purchased them off Amazon about a year ago. We have the 12 oz glasses as well as the 7.75 oz. My two-year-old uses the smaller size everyday. We've dropped them on our hardwood floor several times now and have never had a problem.

I really enjoyed many points in this article, but I want to concern my comment with one particular statement: "We definitely can't be wrong if we are generally kind, honest, and helpful." Yes! Yes, please. I have been horrified by some of the cruel comments I've read here on AT. It is really sad that people can be so mean discussing another person's home. Try to remember that the owner--a real human being--will be reading your comments. Be constructive with your criticism, not vicious.

How to Find the Right Size Ceiling Fan for Every Room

We recently changed out an old ceiling fan for something less ornate: http://www.amazon.com/Monte-Carlo-5DI52BKD-L-52-Inch-5-Blade/dp/B0038KY3V6/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1341166599&sr=8-9&keywords=monte+carlo+ceiling+fan I couldn't be happier with it. I nearly replaced the old fan with a chandelier instead because I really do love the dramatic effect a chandelier can have on a room, but I opted for another ceiling fan after all. After the unusually hot weather we've been having the last several months, I am SO glad I went with the fan.

I meant to include in my comment above that this is a very nice roundup of maps. Thank you! The National Parks map is my favorite.

Regarding the American flag discussion: For what it's worth, I'm a US citizen who lived abroad for three years and has traveled extensively, and I know many countries where citizens and businesses fly their country's flag. I don't think there's anything wrong with showing your pride in your country by doing so. I completely agree that there does seem to be an attitude among some Americans that ours is the best country, and that makes me sad and embarrassed because there are so many countries out there taking care of their citizens and the world a lot better than we are! But there are still many things about the US that make me proud, and I do fly the American flag at home.
