I'm always happy to see "real living" spaces on AT.
I get very tired of the contemporary, single person living, sub-urbanist sparten, neurotic martha stewart goes retro, pie-in the-sky "who lives like this" unatainable fantasy rooms we always see.
Cheers!

I'm pretty sure these are vintage, industrial drain guards (drain dome and collar). Used in swimming pools etc.

yes, Blandwagon brings up a point there. It is a snack and not luncheon. Should there be a service plate at snackies?

I'm guessing you have a child/children, and also work.
Stop beating yourself up by watching DIY shows; (look where removing doors got you).
I agree with the de-cluttering advice already posted, focus on that before you do anything.
Unless you cook three meals a day, downsize your cooking utensils and especially storage items. Everybody goes way too crazy hoarding giant plastic soda cups, tupperware style containers and redundant useless pots, pans and gadgets; ebay, craigslist, yardsale and donate em'. Go through all those drawers!! and bottom cabinets too.
Now if you do cook a lot, let people talk about your ugly kitchen, who cares. If you cook just occasionally for gatherings etc. you can always borrow big pots or buy cheap aluminum disposable, catering pans from the dollar store.
Live your life, cook more food...you'll love the ugly kitchen a lot more.

Definitely a GREAT bargain! Hickory also makes an office/professional line of furniture, which those may very well be. I bought two leather chairs from an office liquidator. That line usually runs between $250 and $600 per chair, dependent on the style.

I had the unfortunate luck to work in a store which decided to start selling "trendy", toy/knickknacks as an "added value dimension" to their totally not related main body of inventory, and horror upon horror of the total impulse sales these useless pieces of junk generated. Yes, people buy this stuff! puppies and kittens, puppies and kittens.

Hi, we had a similar problem with an overwhelming amount of north facing light coming through sliding doors in our living space. There is only a northern exposure, so we have a bluish cast of light which is particularly dominant on overcast and rainy days; it can get really gloomy during the winter. We settled on a light, butter cream yellow to give a warm, sunlit, illuminating effect; however we lived with many paint chips of the same color and intensity placed in different areas for a few key winter months.
Since green is your problem an off-white (or the lightest shade) from the orange, sienna or sepia tone families might help.
The key point is that the underlying pigments in any paint mix can really deceive the eye. You will need to display the color within the prevalent lighting situation to see what tone is truly cast out from the pigment. For example, many of the yellows have a green oxide pigment lurking in their mix and when the paint producers add white to make their lightest shade, that green will fluoresce under the right lighting, totally defeating the effect that you want to achieve. Most of all try all colors and shades from those FREE chips to start, then use sample mixes. Good luck experimenting!

I live in Virginia and have lots of friends male & female who live alone like that. First, what part of Virginia; (I know you can't disclose that), but where you are in the country is real important.

Get an old car (antique plate material...cheap in VA)and leave it visibly & strategically parked (& locked-up) so that when you look out your window any other car will be obvious and importantly, can't get close to your house!
Your neighbors can spot a strange vehicle better as will you.

Tiny wood house....always keep it secured when your out but super easy to break into (crowbar to the door frame, expensive lock go bye-bye).

Don't let folks know too much about exactly where and how you live; most country break-ins are done by casual acquaintances; (weirdo neighbors, the odd handyman, "Friends of Friends"). Make sure only very reliable people know how you live; like your boss, church members or other female friends; folks who will be concerned if they don't hear from you.

Order lots of stuff to be delivered...it's good for UPS and the mailman to drive up pretty often, plus you'll meet your mail carrier.

Otherwise don't be too worried and don't buy expensive gadgets; the police can't get to you lightening fast anyway.

Dog * cell & land line * decent but not crazy bright lights are all good * pepper spray too, when strangers pop-up....sometimes it happens.

Thanks for posting this. There are many simple treasures that we don't know exist in this country, and it's great to see that the town of Sierra Madre thinks that a plant is worthy of reverence and celebration!

I can give you my personal observations of tree stumps and such from 13 years of using wood as a heat source in our house. The type of tree (wood), does lend itself to some unique aging and insect problems. The source of your wood acquisition and the way the wood was stored can also invite rot and insects. In short, yes you can still have wood borer beetle deep in a stump if you don't what to look for and most folks don't know what termite damage in a tree looks like. I don't know much about sealing or curing whole stumps for furniture making but most artisans have some sort of a seasoning area (usually a climate controlled shed or barn), before starting any projects.
Hope you get more tips!
