Kanna,

There are two fantastic architectural salvage places in Baltimore. One is called Second Chance and the other is called Housewerks. They are both located right off of I-95 and near the Ravens and Orioles stadiums. I thinkk that both places have a large selection of vintage tile, though you might want to call ahead to check.

Housewerks used to be located in DC but moved to Baltimore a few years ago, supplies stuff to other retailers (in NYC, etc) and gets some really cool, off-beat stuff in addition to the standard architectural materials. Second Chance is HUGE and is a great resource.

Good luck!

E

My suggestion for paint is a gray-- a warm grey (meaning it has brown undertones). A quick pick was Benjamin Moore's "Ashley gray" (HC-87). I'd go with white accents...towels, shower curtain, etc. Change out the toilet seat asap. And keep the shower curtain completely closed...no need to see more pink than you need to! Ultimately, whatever color combo you choose, I think you should really try to get a nice accent rug that contains all the colors as well as a piece of artwork that features some of the colors. And the artwork needs to be larger in size or hung lower than what's shown in the picture.

I don't really mind the fixtures-- as someone else mentioned they're very Deco...it's the pink wall tiles that bug me out. Especially because they're a different shade of pink than the porcelain fixtures..and have flowers on them (why???).

Though the bathroom someone else linked to looked cute in yellow, I couldn't do it... It'd be like living in a package of Starburst candy. And Tiffany blue, pink and white makes me think of stereotypical baby colors. :-/

Good luck!

Wait!

(I've posted this on comment on a different AT post but it should work for your situation)

I hung a poster once using very small but strong magnets. They're about the diameter of an eraser on the end of a pencil. All you do is put nails or screws into the wall every 12" or so around the edge of the poster/print, about 1" in from the outer edge of the paper. The nails/screws don't need to be large but will provide the metal for the magnet to stick to. Then you can just remove the nails when you move out and plaster the small holes that are left behind. No one will ever notice.

Also, couldn't you also try mounting the paper to a thin wood board or dowel rod at the top and bottom of the image and just hang it like that? The wood pieces would provide structure to keep it looking "flat" though you may need to weight the bottom a bit to make it hang down straight, especially if it was rolled at any point. If you went with a dowel rod, you could probably just put nails into the wall at the top to rest the rod on, or could probably get inexpensive curtain hanging hardware from Ikea that would hold the top rod, letting the rest hang down.

I would avoid using a spray adhesive if you can because that stuff is awful! Aside from the fumes, whenever I have to use it at work my fingers get so sticky I'm like Spiderman for the rest of the day.

I agree with bepsf's post-- there are so many antiques already there it seems a slightly silly question. I'm sure the first family has more say over their bedrooms though...

I'm more interested in knowing what artwork they choose to display because the White House has a great collection. Laura Bush was bold enough to have pulled a Monet painting that had always been housed on the first floor (and was a visitor favorite) to display in the residential area of the house when she and W moved in. I was lucky enough to have been in the residential area once-- yes, it was amazing-- and I can't even begin to imagine how cool/crazy it would be to live with museum quality artwork (and antiques too) on a daily basis.

I leave my porch light on only at night, but on every night, and wish that others did as well. I like to think that it makes the streets in my neighborhood a bit brighter. Our street lamps are dim are spaced far apart. Aside from hoping that the additional light would discourage crime, I also think that having lots of porch lights on would signal to any sketchy people that there are lots of eyes and ears in all those houses...wishful thinking? Our back porch light is on a motion sensor which is more green, but still safety conscious.

I love these! I've seen them before (I can't remember where though) so maybe they're available elsewhere? Or just making appearances in magazines and such? Anyway, though they're cool bowls, I am in love with how they displayed them in the photographs above...and want to buy a bunch of them to hang on a wall as an installation.

If you're interested in wall decals, I wanted to suggest that you look into having them made at a sign shop. I haven't priced it myself, but they should charge by the square foot. So aside from being able to create decals of your own design and being able to specify the color, you can also place the decals close together in your document/design file to maximize what you're getting out of the sqaure footage you're paying for.

Everyone should also check out another great cat song called "Chester" by the band Essex Green. Such a good song and a great sing along too. Lyrics are as follows:

On my way home
I sometimes wonder, "Where have you gone?"
Unattached, you wander alone,
lookin' for what, nobody knows

And you've got so much love
You bring it home in bundles of blood
To my doorstep, to my doorstep, yeah

Doo doo doo doo doo doo...

And it's a funny world out there
When your preying from your lair
And it's a funny world out there...

And if your neighbors could talk
They'd talk you up as the king of the block
Clapping hands with the rest of the lot, six fingered friend, right at the end

And in the end it will be
We'll hear your voice till eternity
Always cryin'
Your friends are dyin', yeah

Doo doo doo doo doo doo...

You may wish to take your cat to the vet just to be on the safe side in case something is wrong with him medically.

However....I second what Bipolarbear said about some cats just going after bath mats. One of my cats (the female) will pee on the bath mat if I put one out...I, too, think it has something to do with the rubber on the back. I've had to switch to a towel-type of bath mat but I haven't had any problems since.

Good luck!

Some people may choose to cover their books to protect the covers from scratches and other types of damage. I don't do this at home, but I work in the Special Collections department of a library, and we cover every book's dust jacket with a translucent acid-free material. It really only matters if your books are valuable, rare, etc......or if you are anal! :)

We were also asked to create and sign roommate contracts every year. My freshman year roommate was absolutely adamant about a "no sex in the room" clause, though I assured her it was unnecessary...I had never even had a boyfriend at that point! Needless to say, she was the one who ran out and found a boyfriend and would have sex allll the time in our room. I walked in on them dozens of times. And then once there was the time that I left my keys in the room while loading my car, only to find out that they locked me out of the room to get it on.... sigh. She also joined this reject sorority along with our two suitemates, so I was completely outnumbered. My roommate wrote all of their rushing events on my wall calendar...because then I would go?? I also learned to sleep through hairdryers and Disturbd cds thanks to her. :)

Oh! And last but not least, my suitemate from that year, moved into my room over winter break (two rooms shared a common bathroom at my college sans locks on the room side of the bathroom door due to fire code restrictions). I dropped by to pick some stuff up and found her sleeping in my bed, using my computer, and the whole room was a pigsty. Apparently there wasn't much I could do about it/her.

i go in and out of phases of really wanting furniture and being obsessed with CL. When I'm REALLY wanting a specific piece of furniture I check craigslist multiple times a day. Sometimes you have to be the first person to email or call....and that's the only way to do it.

i actually bought a bunch of old photos from a junk store to use as inexpensive art in my bathroom. because they were so cheap, i don't mind if they get destroyed by moisture-- though i hope that won't happen! i went with a "water" theme and have a great set of four 2 and a quarter x 2 and a quarter photos-- probably taken with a brownie camera in the 50's, 60's or 70's. My absolute favorites are of a killer whale doing tricks in a tank at what appears to be a brand-spanking-new Sea World and a portrait of a family taken while they are in the ocean-- the child sitting on a surfboard and the mom wearing an awesome embellished swim cap. :) i get lots of complements on them and never tire of looking at the myself.

Yay! I'm waiting for an AT Baltimore! The architecture in Baltimore IS interesting. All of the neighborhoods have a very distinct style and feel. I live in a part of town that looks like the very first postcard-- only, imagine two windows across the top floor and a big, arched window on the first floor.

So, a bit of information for those not from Baltimore (and even those who do live here but just don't know). The marble used on all of our steps (assuming its original) came from the same quarry that the marble for the monuments in DC came from. There are some great photographs by A. Aubrey Bodine (a Maryland photographer) of people scrubbing their steps-- they were loved at one point in time.

Also, aside from our own unique architectural styles, we also have buildings designed by Mies van der Rohe (2 that I know of) and I.M. Pei (though I don't think it's one of his more impressive buildings). Recently MICA (art school) has been introducing some interesting buildings on their campus as well.

Also, Baltimore is littered with warehouses, which have become really popular living qaurters. Unfortunately many of them are in sketchy areas. But they are gorgeous! Especially on some of the 5th floors which have huge arched windows. *sigh*

My housemate couldn't get his Lexus started one morning. When he popped the hood, he found the source of the problem... which was still sitting in/on his engine after having munched through some wires. Rats are notoriously big-- and bad-- in Baltimore, and "flat rats" (road kill rats) earned the title of the city's worst eyesore in last year's Best of Baltimore Citypaper. *shudder*

if you swallow two magnets they can rip through your intestinal walls to get to each other (because their attraction is strong enough)

on a side note, a friend and i used these to hang posters and other unframed artwork in an exhibition we organized. we put nails into the wall under the corners of each peice and then used the magnets, placed on top, to hold the artwork in place. it worked wonderfully and didn't leave any damage to the paper like pins or tacks would have.
