I make gravy a couple times a month at least. We love a biscuits and gravy breakfast.

Oh, and from the Krylon website it suggests starting with an artificial pumpkin. So you could use the same one each year!

Looks awfully small for the hens to live comfortably, and doesn't look like it would easily interface with a run.

Also, maybe the wood is sealed but the oils from cedar are not good for birds' respiratory systems.

I thought the first picture was beautiful so went to the website - $66 for a single dinner plate?!? How is spending that much money on something that can be found recycled at any thrift store a sustainable practice?

Do you think you could do this with snow peas? That's what I have an over abundance of right now - and they are getting a little too large.

I've started avoiding any recipe that calls for beating the egg whites separately because I can never seem to get it right.

My problem is that in addition to the egg white that holds peaks I end up with a clear/yellowish liquid at the bottom of the bowl.

What am I doing wrong?

I've got a composter out in the back yard, and something they sold with it called a "kitchen keeper" to toss scraps into before we take a load outside.

We've been keeping the "kitchen keeper" under the sink, alongside the trash and recycling, but lately have noticed that's it's attracting/hatching flies.

Any tips on what to do about this? The compost in the freezer idea above sounds good, but doesn't compost need to create heat to work?

I have a house from the 40's, but previous owners have 'remodeled' and taken away a lot of the charm - I've been going through and changing back doors, hardware, and knobs. The kitchen is the next big project.

In Portland we're lucky to have the rebuilding center, a non profit that salvages building materials and then resells them. Lots of good vintage finds.

It's true that you need to be very careful that your coop is safe from predators both large and small. The chickens are counting on you to keep them safe.

Our chickens are such a joy to have around! They have great personalities and lay eggs too!

Here's a look at our new and improved coop that we finished last September; http://willitgrowpdx.blogspot.com/2010/01/chickens.html

I'm doing my best to start a vegetable garden this year. I've been working on making a plan, but timing how long things will take to be ready to harvest - so I can know what I can plant in that space next - has been a bit of a challenge.

I'm also easily discouraged when it seems like something isn't thriving.

I just lost some early radish sprouts to my chickens - so I need to do some replanting.

I'm documenting my progress here; http://willitgrowpdx.blogspot.com/
and sharing it in a blog has really helped keep me going - if I just want to give up or not bother I think about how sad it would be to just stop posting, and that helps me keep going.

We recently revamped our coop too! Chickens are great fun, and a lovely addition to home food production (eggs) and they make great contributions to the compost heap too! You can see our new coop here; http://willitgrowpdx.blogspot.com/2010/01/chickens.html

Here in Portland, OR, we're having a pretty mild winter so far. I am in the process of designing and starting my first real vegetable garden. I'm using the cold days to read gardening books, look through seed catalogs, and make a garden plan.

This weekend, I'm going to check out a couple of local garden stores and see what seeds are in stock. The way things are going, peas will be able to be planted in just a few weeks!

I'm tracking my progress here; http://willitgrowpdx.blogspot.com/

There's not much now, but things should really pick up as I get a few seeds in the ground.

We love the Rebuilding center! We've gotten materials for a number of projects there, the prices are really very good. We've even gotten windows and other recycled materials to incorporate into our chicken coop!

We have also taken out of towners there for a visit, it's a nice taste of PDX.

I live in Portland Oregon, where we have a very specific gardening climate, I've been drooling over the Territorial Seed catalog for a couple of weeks (their seeds are proven in the NW) and plan to order from them soon.

I'll probably get a few starts from local nurseries as well.

Hopefully this isn't too shameless a plug, but it seems relevant: just this morning I started a blog to track my progress creating a kitchen garden of raised beds here in Portland. I hope to update frequently, especially once seeds start being planted. http://willitgrowpdx.blogspot.com/

The recipe and idea sound great. But I'm not crazy about the tone at the beginning of the article. Why is it such an ordeal or imposition to have to feed a vegetarian? Heck, why not take cruelty out of Thanksgiving all together and have a stratifying vegetarian feast everyone can enjoy. Surely the meat-eaters won't waste away if they go one meal without a dead animal on the table.

I've been 'the vegetarian guest' before, and the hosts (even though they were family) let me know what an ordeal it was to have to make any concessions whatsoever, even just to make sure that a side dish or two were vegetarian (I brought my own tofurkey).

Don't miss the point of Thanksgiving, and sharing time with loved ones, by being too set in your ways to try something new.
