I would suggest that she skip the block and go with something like the Bamboo Knife Dock that is sold at the Container Store. It's better for your knives.

I found an Amber Jack recipe on iDrink.com. <http://www.idrink.com/v.html?id=50029>

It is basically a Sour made with bourbon and amaretto. I would up the wow-factor by making my own fresh sour mix. Instead of the unnatural red maraschino cherry, I would skewer tropical fruit slices with cocktail parasols.

The real problem with interpreting scientific literature is being able to understand the how the researcher analyzed the data. Even many scientists cannot do this at a sophisticated level. Therefore they make the mistake of taking the author's conclusions at face value.

Nobody is trying to mislead, but the general level of limited understanding of statistics and scientific methodology prevents journalists from reading research results with a critical eye.

I bought a rub mixture that uses maple sugar as an ingredient. I use on salmon when I broil or sear it. It is basically a breakfast sausage spice mixture with maple sugar added.

I like it so much that I plan to try to replicate it when I use up what I bought.

I bought myself Sara Jenkins new cookbook/iPad app New Italian Pantry. I adore it. It lays out the staples that an Italian always has in their pantry with videos on how use and store them. Then when you come home from the market with something fresh you can enter it into the search function and come up with a recipe, knowing that you have all the other ingredients on hand. Genius!

The first time I encountered a recipe that told me to caramelize onions, it didn't tell me how to do it. The illustration simply showed dark, seemingly crispy onions on top of the dish. So, being ingenious I put two and two together. I sautéed the onion in butter and when they were beginning to brown I thew in some sugar and continued to cook them until the sugar caramelized around them.
My dinner guests loved them.

I always find OTC egg nog disappointing. My family's traditional recipe is not nearly as thick (viscus) as carton egg nog. We reserve the whites to make a meringue that floats on the top of the punch bowl. "The Recipe" is not difficult to make but it does produce a huge batch. I'm happy to have it only once a year when Mom makes it.

I've been draining my beans before freezing them, thinking that would help them retain their integrity. I'll try your method.

I find that the "soup spoons" sold with most sets are actually small serving spoons. Proper soup spoons are round and deeper. They are much easier to use. I have a section full of those and I have to find them in vintage and thrift stores.

Made this and LOVE it.

As a single person, the recipe make a huge amount. Much more than you can eat before it goes bad.

I decided to modify the dressing and freeze half of it. I made the dressing as given except that I left out the yoghurt (which I didn't think would freeze feel). I tossed the non-dairy dressing into the salad and then divided it into single servings. I froze half of those. When I want to eat a serving, I mix in fresh fruit and yoghurt or keifer.

Next time I'll half the ingredients.
