if you have friends you actually LIKE, things like long showers and unmade beds dont matter at all! when i think about all of the happiness that my friends bring into my life, and how fun it its to have them around, and how much i miss them when they are gone, i really dont have time to fuss over their eating habits, or texting frequency.

obviously, there are some obligatory family situations that are an exception.

but my only rule for guests is: COME WHENEVER YOU LIKE! SEE YOU SOON!!

2 linen baskets at the foot of the bed: one has pjs and extra blankets, and the other one is a temporary spot for the outfit ive worn during the day. whenever i get a chance in the morning, or sometimes after a day or two, i take the basket with worn clothes and separate it with the rest of the laundry. without a temptation to throw clothes on the floor or over a chair, my bedroom actually stays tidy...

oh man, my rental company slaughtered our gorgeous old building. they just plopped horrible cheap fiber board cabinets on top of gorgeous built ins (some lucky units still have them). in our apt they even left some of the built ins (a custom pantry, original molding and built in ironing board) which creates a visually painful juxtaposition.

this space has an uncanny appeal. while i dont think it deserves to necessarily win any design contests, it is still very very attractive. not perfect, but endearing. charming, lived in, homey, personal. cool, but not super cool, which might actually be just right...

beautiful. i know 850 sf is pretty big, but sharing a open floor plan like that with someone else does take some creativity... you did a good job of creating discreet spaces with quirky, personal details.

is that a fireplace near the sliding doors? that little carved out area could be a really nice nook area for reading and entertaining...

LOVE the "sparse" look of the uncovered hard wood! stay strong, dont get a rug!! also loved that your lifestyles really informed the design. its true that cluttered shelves can be a bad thing. but having access to any album you want when ever you want it even though you share a tiny apartment? amazing! i think you've made some smart choices.

cool. bonus points for making treasure from other people's trash. this place might not be gorgeous or perfect, but it shows practical and creative commitment to REduce, REuse, REcycle. thanks for sharing!

chico's (the woman's clothing store) is doing the same kind of thing with their marketing. their newest catalog is supposedly set in palm springs and the copy explicitly references the MCM influence.

mid century aesthetics are very trendy right now, not just in furniture and home design. these stores (j crew, chicos, and others) are selling the swing coats and cigarette pants that were popular when bertoia was (note the cinched waist and cropped pants in the j crew window). in that way, it actually *does* accent the clothing and isnt as much about being a "lifestyle store" as it is about giving context to these looks (albeit in a trite, corporate way). i wouldnt be surprised if j crew has 50s lounge music playing...

tea towels mounted on stretcher bars (like you use to make a canvas) are perfect art for a humid bathroom: they dont warp and can easily be taken apart and washed. their texture also nicely complements bathroom linens... you can also do this to display vintage scarves...
