i think if you don't puree it, it's not considered gazpacho. We do make a salad in Spain that has mostly the same ingredients as gazpacho, but chopped rather than pureed. It's called 'picadillo' and we often add tuna (packed in olive oil) and hard boiled egg to it. it's delicious!

as for gazpacho, i'm pretty sure every family has their own recipe. in our family, we never add bread or onion. we do serve it with croutons on the side, as an option, as well as red and green peppers and hard boiled egg -- but just when we're feeling fancy. for the most part, there's always a pitcher of it in the fridge throughout the summer and we have been known to pour it straight into a glass and drink it up without the fuss of bowl and spoon!

well, i know this is going to sound very unusual to a lot of folks but from my puerto rican mom i learned that in puerto rico pasta w/ red sauce is usually served with a side of fried ripe plantains or better yet baby bananas (which are much higher in sugar content and caramelize beautifully when fried). it's really good together!!!
i know this isn't technically a way to finish a sauce, but it's a great complement to the red sauce and a delicious new thing to try.

we are adding an itty bitty bathroom under our stairs and were in the market for a small water-saving toilet. we settled on an American Standard FloWise dual flush. it is rated to remove 1000 grams of solid waste in a single flush -- better than the Toto Aquia (500-800 grams, depending on the model) and the Duravit (500-600 grams), and at a very reasonable price. the dimensions are the same as the Toto, the bowl is skirted (easy clean-up, no nooks and crannies for dust and other stuff to hide in) and it is a comfort/right height bowl (which makes it ADA compliant). the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has a very informative list of eco-toilets w/ all the ratings.

i'm pretty sure Contigo is a Catalan restaurant, not Basque -- both are regional Spanish cuisines, but very different

that, and i'm totally making this tomorrow!

i have a question for folks whose cleaning products include only white vinegar and baking soda: what do you use for cleaning wood surfaces? aren't vinegar and baking soda too abrasive for wood? i would love to reduce my stash of cleaning supplies but i always have some oil/wax for my wood coffee table, dressers and shelves.

dear writer,
a point about grammar:

"we wish we would have trim our list..."

try:
we wish we had trimmed our list

well, i hate to bring this up but as a homeowner in san francisco, i've received notices from the city for items *other people* have left out in front of my building. the only tree on the block happens to be in front of our place and people apparently like to use it as a place to drop off their mostly useless items.

let's face it, most of the stuff you see on the street is crap. i like a good find (especially a free one) as much as the next person but most things people tend to leave out on the street are not awesome: futons and mattresses, old computer monitors, old microwaves, broken chairs, old TV's, stained cat-clawed sofas... and yes, the occasional piece of furniture that can be turned into something nice with some elbow grease.

but this is comes at a cost. our quality of life suffers when our streets are filled with garbage that other people are too lazy or irresponsible to dispose of properly.

i'm a bit disappointed to see apartment therapy endorsing this un-neighborly practice.

folks, find a thrift store that accepts donations and donate your items. you get a tax write-off, the streets are free of clutter and folks like me don't have to spend their time navigating the city's bureaucracy to have a notice/fine cleared up. and, in addition, the money people pay to buy your item at the thrift store will help a worthy cause.

I agree with all those who have suggested you get some more boxes and create an interesting pattern with them on the wall.

i myself would paint the existing box white and put some nice fabric inside the glass pane to hide the meter.

here is an example of what i have in mind:

i adore Manhattan style clam chowder and it's impossible to find here in San Francisco.... cioppino is a pretty great trade-off, though!

i'm a little late to this thread, but i have a vintage lamp that is the inspiration for this lamp. mine is all white lamps, with chrome hardware, and the post is actually a long tension rod (about 9 feet) that goes from floor to ceiling. it is very cool, but our apartment has 14 foot ceilings, so we can't use it!

hey Sydney, you beat me to it but i was going to suggest a Talking Heads song as well - "Don't worry about the government":

I see the clouds that move across the sky
I see the wind that moves the clouds away
It moves the clouds over by the building
I pick the building that I want to live in

I smell the pine trees and the peaches in the woods
I see the pinecones that fall by the highway
That's the highway that goes to the building
I pick the building that I want to live in

It's over there, it's over there
My building has every convenience
It's gonna make life easy for me
It's gonna be easy to get things done
I will relax alone with my loved ones

Loved ones, loved ones visit the building,
take the highway, park and come up and see me
I'll be working, working but if you come visit
I'll put down what I'm doing, my friends are important
