i grew up reading emily post and amy vanderbilt (yes, for real, and yes, for fun) and will never forget my mother teaching me how to properly set a table. it might seem overly fussy, but it does make a difference. especially the knife blade being turned toward the plate!

the pretzel thins are not allowed in my house, especially not in company with the blue cheese dip. the peanut-butter filled pretzels and kettle korn are going to have to suffer the same fate. likewise the glazed walnuts or the chocolate covered coconut or the macarons or the chocolate covered marshmallows... i may or may not have a problem.

I just reconfigured my living room and eliminated an intended "landing strip" that nobody used, including me. I've been planning on creating a new one, but it will involve getting rid of a large desk and relocating a bookshelf, among other adventures. Still, no time like the present. I think I'll start with the hall closet, though.

I dislike having people over as well. There is no logical reason behind it; I just like my house peaceful. But at the same time, having guests (not just friends) over forces you to be more attentive to your home.

if you don't have a microwave, freezing food in glass jars and reheating them in boiling water works well. put something between the bottom of the pot and the jar (a dishcloth or some folded paper towesl) while it's on the heat to prevent the jar from cracking, add water to the height of or just below the food, bring to a boil, and reduce the water to a simmer. when the food warms enough to loosen, you can put it right into the pot (without water) for further heating,

Bacon freezes well. I would cook it, cool it, then wrap it snail-fashion in plastic wrap - roll each piece vertically. You can then take out one piece at a time. You can also crumble or cut it with scissors and store it in a jar in the freezer - perfect for snacking!
