I don't think you have to worry about it too much, really...I have a 1 and 3 year old with light gray couches and a light rug. jamesparish: we looked at several styles on apartment therapy for inspiration. there are also some tutorials if you google "pipe shelving." for the shelves, we used reclaimed fencing, so it has a very rustic / industrial feel. we decided to space 16" between each shelf. we went to home depot and they threaded the pipe for free. let me know if you have any other questions!
