I did these with my 21 month old. It was a lot of fun! He figured out how to do it right away.

I made some with apples recently. It would be a great project to do with kids: http://thismummaslife.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/apple-bird-feeders/

I wish this didn't focus so much on just computer type technology. My husband is a geek Dad, but he is also geeky in his like for hands on projects such as model-making and tinkering. He is more likely to make a robot out of junk around the house for our son than to play a computer game with him.

My son is one and a half and his bedroom is right off of our kitchen. His room is baby-proofed, and he will play in there by himself quite often. My husband and I will peek in on him while we are making dinner or whatever and he'll be sitting there, looking at books or playing with toys contentedly. He is not always this self-sufficient...all kids have needy/clingy days, and of course we also play with him a lot. But I guess my point is that not all kids won;t play alone till older.

I am of German roots, but I didn't come to learn of the tradition until my adulthood. I believe I read about it online or found one in a store. We now have a pickle ornament, and plan to make it a tradition with our son to try to find it...not sure if it will be associated with a gift or not. If we ever have another child make the prize would be a bit of marzipan or something. :)

Oh my gosh! I am freaking out over here! I am a Mom, an artist, AND a barista, and this looks like heaven to me. Huge kudos and admiration!

My son finger-painted a pumpkin too. I never thought of using tape to make a shape though. He is little though, so we chose a little pumpkin:
