I just saved the geese ceramics from the donate pile at both my mother's, and my mother-in-law's, respectively. I now have the circa 1987 geese with bows and bonnets collection, complete with napkin holder, cookie jar, spoon rest and toothpick dispenser. I am basically banking on this.

Trend Prediction: What Do You Think is The Next Big Thing?

We have very traditional decorations, red, green and silver on the tree (excepting a few ornaments from our childhoods) and our red and green monogrammed stockings / tree skirt. It's funny because I love funky eclectic decor in general for my home, but something about the red and green makes it feel like Christmas to me. Plus we move every one to two years, so having the same things every year is a nice change of pace. Gotta have a real tree, I love going and picking it out every year even though it bums me out to kill a live tree.

After reading these comments I don't think I will be taking my three small kids on a plane until they are all school age. Sounds like a nightmare and the anxiety knowing that many of the people around me were wishing my family and I would disappear to some other family only flight would be unbearable. It sucks that our culture is so intolerant of children; how easy it must be to forget that we were all once there ourselves.

One of my favorite tours ever, and I don't care for taxidermy unless it is obviously fake ( ceramic rhino head, etc). I love all the gingham and buffalo check, mixed with the modern. Amazing.

We use oats for our sensory box, and we do a small Tupperware container on the floor. My toddlers love it.

The birdseed idea is genius though, I think we will do that next.

We bought in 07 and when we needed to relocate after a layoff two years later, we were 50k underwater. We decided to short sale.

Three years later, we are renters still. Our credit is recovering, and we are very happy we did it. There are worse things.

Ten places in twenty five years. Five in the last seven years with my husband and our children, age six and under. To some extent, they are all home, but some more than others. Even though we only stayed a year or so on average in our last 5 homes, we always hang pictures, I always paint when allowed to, make changes, etc. I always seem to think we will stay longer than we do. I like treating each house like I might stay forever. We have been in our current home two years and have decided to stay for a while longer. It feels good, strange, but good.

How Many Homes Have You Lived In? (And What Makes a Home, Anyway?)

Echoing others; owning a house at this point is just not worth the risk. We bought a home in 2007 and due to a job change, sold at a massive loss in 2009. It's been three years and I don't even want to talk about it. Why wouldn't I rent a nice place and let someone else maintain it and fix it when the toilet crumbles or the heat stops working? I may want to own again in the future, but not today.

Also, my husband and I are 25 and 30, and like others mentioned, are still paying for school. Most of our peers are totally broke, and very few own anything of value. We feel lucky to be able to rent a house, have one car, and pay our bills.

@madampince, Yes! Floors!

It's so hard to get motivated to wash them knowing full well there will be a parade of sippy cup shaking toddlers walking on them within minutes.

Sigh.

I agree with Elisabeth33, you don't need a 2 bedroom! I agree that if you van relegate your son's things to the master, and then you will be able to each have your own space. Perhaps a loft bed in the living room for your self with either a sofa or a workspace underneath would save space, and I agree with the commentor that mentioned putting a chair or sofa in your son's room to make it family room esque. Have fun with it. I would love to live in NYC but with three small kids I have not yet found the bravery :)

Okay, so knowing full well I am in the 400's, I am commenting anyway.

Negativity is part of life; I think it's ok on a post like this, rather than on a real person's house tour. That's just mean spirited. It doesn't make you a bad person to not like certain things. I doubt that any of the people here would head over to someone's house and say, "Dude, your blinds are hideous, your cat stinks, and I hate your hunter green countertops." The inanimate objects are not going to get personally offended.

That said, I can't stand a dirty microwave. I got rid of mine because I felt like it was never clean enough.

Also, a TV in every room/more TVs than people. I like TV, too, but there is more to life.

This is a little off subject, but when I see someone texting while they drive, I get ridiculously angry; it's a visceral thing.

The sets were gorgeous. I was in love. The painted piano! The minimalism! That staircase!

The movie was as good as I was expecting, too.

That sink is amazing! Love the after.

Add me to the camp of "paint your ceiling a color" people. It would be so fun to paint it yellow, or lavender, and get a couple of accessories in the same color.

I adore this idea. I should have done this instead of spending 300 dollars on chairs that are already scratched four months later.

I like to visit my parents; I think of that as a third space since I have my own family now. It's one of the few places I feel as comfortable bringing my little ones as I do in my own home.

Third spaces like coffee shops and libraries tend to be super overcrowded where I live in the 'burbs, since there are so few, and there is no anonymity when you live in your hometown and it can be hard to relax if you know everyone in the place from high school.

Sometimes, I miss small city living.

The only true splurge in my house was our oh so comfy king size mattress, which was the best gift ever from my inlaws.

Everything else was either Craigslist, or free, with the kids furniture purchased from Ikea or West Elm. We did spring for some entry level dining chairs from Room and Board, but they are already ruined and scratched four months later.

I have three kids six and under. Nothing that doesn't breathe is safe for long in our house.
