Oh how I WISH I had reliable public transportation! I live just over the river from Canada's Capital, Ottawa (where I work), in Hull, Quebec. The drive to work is 13km, in about 35 minutes plus a less than 10 minute stop at the daycare to drop off my son. If we were to bus, we would have to take a 30+ minute bus ride to the centre of Ottawa, plus a 40 minute with 2 transfers WEST to daycare, then I would have to walk (in -15 most mornings) the 10-15 minute walk from his daycare to my work. 35 vs 80+ minutes in bad weather and unreliable buses??? I think I'll drive. Even the stress of driving cannot be outweighed by the time wasted busing around with a 2 year old in tow. I wish they would FIX the transportation issues in this country as I would HAPPILY take public transit if it were reliable. (end rant)

Totally agree with @serrins_k!

I am completely this way too... I would have been one of those Inspiration binder people if I had the time, and using pinterest to save only the things I absolutely love, is the key to not actually having to buy them.

I can't do that two-week rule as I LOVE to shop at thrift stores... and you can't wait two weeks... it will be gone that day or the next.

Like many others, I subscribe to the rule of never buying things unless they are on sale, and not buying something "just because its on sale". I love my stuff, but I'm pretty good at getting rid of things I no longer need, and promise myself it will not be replaced by something else once it is gone.

Sometimes you have to let yourself have a few "impulsive don't really need it" items though. Great example from this week: I've been dying to have a little table for my two year old to play with playdoh and colour ... etc. We don't really have the space, so I have been putting it off. I found a unique set at a thrift store that not only serves a two year old, but 'grows up' with him and can use it as a desk later. $27 later, I was posting our lounge chair on Kijiji (like Craigslist). Sorry lounger, but the two year old is pretty happy!!!

I'm sorry, I don't usually post negative comments, however, this really doesn't appeal to me at all, at all, at all! I need the real thing, or an awfully good imitation! I like to smell the tree in the house, and see the branches and needles and water it every morning, and burn it at the first campfire of the season! I guess I'm not ready for a modern tree!

We found ours after our neighbours did a clean sweep and left all their perfectly good TEAK furniture out on the curb. The mirror was meant to go on top of a nine-drawer buffet-style side unit... but we had other ideas. We turned it vertically and VOILA! Full length luxurious hall mirror for our tiny, dark hall. Suddenly, it didn't feel so small! I like free. Free is best.

Also, Gifts aren't even needed! Friends should help each other out... but I'm for the casual 'used house crap' gifts - if its given out of thoughtfulness rather than just to empty a cupboard. Its great to get together with friends to get over a break-up or when you're going through a rough patch... but to me, this idea of throwing a break-up shower is like throwing a baby shower for your dog.

Breakup Shower: Would You Throw One?
Would You Want One?

Before I had my son, I felt obligated (requested by many!) to register at various stores. It would never have been my choice to register or throw myself a baby shower - my husband was throwing the shower - I was amazed he thought to organize it! I reluctantly registered at 2 or 3 local stores, and only registered for inexpensive practical items.. believe me... the lists were not long!!! Let people have fun buying you gifts - the unexpected, thoughtful or handmade gift is always the best. And if your friends aren't creative or handy they'll just get you a card or a gift card. No registry needed.

Add to the list:

Benjamin Moore Affinity Line : Azores. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/azores

Its more green than blue, but it was the perfect compromise for my basement apt and my teal-loving eyes. It goes so perfectly with my teak furniture!

My closet tip (I think I'm a genius for this one....) is using the under-bed boxes under the hanging clothes in my closet. They fit PERFECTLY under our two rows of hanging clothes, and I can easily fit all my out-of-season clothing and footwear with room to spare. This leave the top shelf for storing other things (for me, its quilts and duvets). Great for small spaces when you don't have under bed storage or very many closets!

I'm totally in agreement with @superdewa - I'm all over more air moving through a space and more light in all spaces. If they were designed well, I don't think you would have to worry about the picture frames falling over.

@wallflowerpower - really? You're comparing a rotating loo to kitchen here? You should try living in a small (500-600 sf) apt and see if this wouldn't appeal then!

Hi,

I love that this room is glam but more importantly, safe and functional for a growing explorer. When I saw the stool in the preview images, I prayed that is wasn't the only seating in the room!!

I would have felt personally responsible for delivering a comfy nursing/feeding chair for Momma. ;)

Ps..... for further managing money and keeping score - have a look at Til Debt Do Us Part TV show. Not sure if this is aired in the States or not.... but Gail Vaz-Oxlade is RUTHLESS with couples to keep score on housework and expenses!

Love both articles - I can see how the first may be taken as a more traditional (old-fashioned?) view on gender roles and that some would find it unrealistic or impractical to put a price tag on housework. (since everyone has to do it at some point!) I agree with some posters that the person who enjoys and has time for a task should be the one to do it... however, each partner would have to agree to - and uphold - this arrangement.

It was raised that taking the time to - "keep score" - indicates that they aren't doing it right. My partner and I certainly 'keep score'. This way works for us. We have to do this. Otherwise, we might get to the end of the month and wonder where the money went! (I'm sure we've all been here!) We live on a very limited income, and have a young child who we alternate staying home with. The jobs get done, there is little nagging, and we aren't relying on finger crossing or credit to get us through the month. In writing down what we spend, we control our 'spontaneous' spending, and really see where the money goes. Its pretty amazing what you CAN live on when you try, and it makes doing all these other homemaking jobs for yourselves even more appreciable. In our case, it would not be possible to hire someone to do these things for us, and when a little time is spent each day by both partners, the housework is managed, if not perfect.

I really enjoyed seeing such an array of opinions on these ideas! They are close to my heart, as we have worked hard to figure out what works for us at home, as well as keep us sane and debt free. (More important to us than the actual figure we bring home!)

This soup name is quite misleading. Shouldn't Sourgrass Soup have sourgrass in it? (Aka, Sorrel). I was rather disappointed to see that the key ingredient wasn't even there!!!
