I geeked out quite a bit this year on the Halloween front. I tried to decorate with things from around the house and did minimal shopping. I'm still fussing with this stuff, so it's a work in progress, but here are some shots, if you're still reading.

I caught a ghost in a cloche jar and threw some plastic eyeballs ($1 for 6 at Family Dollar) into a jar of candy corn.

Make homemade ghosts on the cheap. Stagger two pieces of white tissue paper, wad up a plastic shopping bag (or use newspaper), tie the stuffing into the center of the tissue paper with twine. Cut out eyes from black construction paper. You can hang them by their collars with fishing line, or just by their collars.

More ghosts haunt the dining area in my apartment (hanging from the Algue I put on the awful peacock etchings on the mirror).

A jar of pickled eyeballs in green water, a big beaker with a bizarre "specimen" (a swatch of cheap Halloween shroud from Family Dollar suspended in colored water), a pomegranate and some persimmons from the grocery store, and a $5 skull from Target. A few inches off camera are some tall glass cylinders from the kitchen filled with candy.

I grouped some black ceramics and rustic objects from around the house with a $5 glow pumpkin I got last year on clearance at the drugstore; some draped gauzey shroud material makes my framed art a bit spookier, rounding out the theme.

Best time to buy Halloween decorations is, of course, after Halloween. I keep those things with my Christmas decorations—in the top box for easy access.

Thanks for letting me share and enjoy the holiday!

Great piece! As in most studio situations, there are often many unsung heroes contributing to successful designs. Irving Harper worked under George Nelson's direction for over a decade and brought much of the whimsy to pieces we associate with Nelson. His hand can be seen in the clocks, the Marshmallow Sofa and the iconic graphic design of the Herman Miller brand. Check out some of his personal work in this post from a few years ago—you'll recognize his touch:

Thanks so much, Kass! I'm happy to have been a finalist and I love Alison's winning room. I like that there were all kinds of rooms that appealed to different sensibilities—please don't read my previous statement as a negative. I'm thrilled with this experience! And it looks like Alison has a thing for Eames chairs, too. They'll look great in her home.

Aww, thanks guys! It may not be everyone's taste, but I'm very proud of it and put a lot of thought into it. I'm a graphic designer and I wanted to do something bold and hopefully a little different with midcentury furniture.

Howdy! It's actually Martha Stewart Wrought Iron. I had to name the palette something and it reminded me of Aleksandr Rodchenko's "End Of Painting" canvases of primary colors. Rodchenko's blue is midnight...practically black. His yellow is dingy, mustard-like. (His red is brick- or blood-colored; I opted for brighter reds and oranges instead.) I saw the paintings at MoMA years ago and they stuck with me. Thanks for writing! The contest has been a lot of fun to follow and be a part of.

I've promoted it on my Facebook page and told my friends about it, which is presumably what other people are doing. I certainly don't want anyone to break the rules.

Thanks for your comments!

Nicole: That is a Case Study cabinet—a reproduction Eames cabinet by Modernica. A lot of Eames purists frown on Modernica's reproductions, but I've always had a soft spot for them since I first wandered into their (now closed) store in SoHo. Modernica seems to be thriving and expanding their factory in LA. Modernica.net

I got this particular cabinet from ebay—a guy in Brooklyn was moving to California. There's always awesome stuff on Craigslist and ebay.

Joseph: Everyone loves the painting. How could we not? Thank you!

I never thought of midcentury design as "earthy," though many classic pieces honor the natural materials that make them. I appreciate the fusion of industrial thought, materials and processes with the whimsy, ergonomics and optimism of MCM. Unless you're accentuating a midcentury kitsch factor, MCM furniture will always look timeless in your home.

Inventive use of materials. Love the rich colors next to the raw wood and brick. The bed looks cozy, despite the raw materials around it. Nice!
