Living in Canada we don't have nearly as many shows available on Netflix...le sigh. However last winter my husband and I did a marathon of all Mad Men episodes in a matter of weeks, like 3 per night, and then were so bummed to have to watch the newest season on t.v with commercials one at a time. We've been doing X-Files much the same way so my dreams (actual dreams from watching too much I think) of being married to Don Draper have just transferred to being married to Fox Mulder. Yes! I totally remember that one...well, vague recollections that I used to find it pretty darn scary. I think I remember a scene where the old lady pushes one of the girls in a stream or something with a big branch? What Was Your First Scary Movie? Dare To Rent It Tonight? |

No birds but squirrels yes...twice in two different houses. First time my husband was in the loft overlooking the kitchen and I was standing below by the screendoor. I see the squirrel run upstairs and it's on the railing, then it jumps on my husband's head and when he grabbed it, it kinda of squirmmed up and out like a wet bar of soap. Hilarious. Second time I was alone and in the middle of breastfeeding my son when I heard a weird clicking sound in the kitchen so I got up with my son in hand to check it out and we came face to face with a squirrel. He ran back into the living room and eventually I trapped him back in the fireplace. We've since moved a third time but we haven't had a squirrel incident in this house. Yet. We cook a lot and we're messy so we do run the self-clean every few months or so. We have had this happen twice. When we moved last year and bought a new professional grade range we also got the extended warranty...we were glad we did. It's a little frustrating when a new so-called "professional" grade appliance craps out like that though. I will say that since the repairman came and fixed it we haven't had any problems. I still won't do a self-clean before we host a dinner, I'll wait til afterwards. Why You Should (Almost) Never Use Your Oven's Self-Cleaning Function |

My 3 year old son would love this (he's obsessed with octopuses) and I think it's pretty cool too! DIY Idea: Lightbox Octopus Dresser Brooklyn Limestone |

The farm looks awesome. My odd Neko Case story is that a few years ago, before I knew who she was and when I used to dye my hair red, I had a guy walk up to me in a bar and tell me that I looked just like Neko Case and what the heck was I doing with "that guy" pointing at my boyfriend. Well 5 years and two kids Iater I'm still with "that guy" and still don't see a resemblance but I would love to have that farmhouse. Rock Star Neko Cases's Farmhouse Kitchen Country Living |

I had a job through university where I sold pillows and duvets and was pretty grossed out after learning about dust mites. Did you know that after approx. 4 years about 1/4 of the weight of your pillow is dust mite and dust mite feces. Definitely time to replace at that point. Pillow protectors help and you can wash a down pillow or duvet. Here's another tip: put a tennis ball or running shoe in the dryer and it will help re-fluff. A crib with a waterproof matress pad. I used a bassinette for the first few months in our room for both my kids, and we still play musical beds, but I like having a crib to at least put them down so we can pretend everyone has their own bed. A chair to nurse in; I used a Poang and found it worked quite well and enjoyed that it didn't take up too much space or was too expensive. A breastfeeding pillow...I've used all sorts of pillows and even my purse in a pinch but it was just soooo much easier to have a breastfeeding pillow beside my Poang for the many, many night feeds and now we read bedtime stories there. A diaper genie...I tried a smaller can with the lid and peddle but it just doesn't hide the smell and taking the trash out twice a day sometimes just wasn't in the cards. Oh and a shelf above the changing table where I could put diapers so the kids couldn't reach and throw them on the floor during changes...but after a certain age the floor is just as easy. I live in Southern Ontario and everyone I know says "pop". Though we call all soft drinks pop, my husband will often order a "cola" (which bothers me for some reason) because he doesn't care whether it's Coke or Pepsi and most places only carry one or the other. I feel your pain. I also have a december birthday, December 26th which is its own holiday (Boxing Day) in Canada. A Christmas birthday often results in the christmas/birthday combo gift or birthday gifts wrapped in christmas paper, travelling, left-overs, everyone too busy to come to a birthday party. Three years ago when I was pregnant with my son we had a Christmas/birthday dinner planned for the 26th which we missed entirely when I went into labour very early in the morning. The party went on without us. They ended up making a game out of guessing what time my son would be born and his weight. He didn't end up being born until the 27th and when we came home a few days later we were greeted by a house full of gifts like Christmas put on pause. Now that my son is turning three I think we'll start our own tradition by going out just the two of us to do something special. Real Life at Home: Jennifer's Birthday Party Disaster |

Growing up in Canada I took it for granted that people took their shoes off when entering a house. It's just a given. We take our shoes off in our house but I'm not opposed to people wearing "indoor shoes" or party specific foot attire if we hosted something more formal. That aside, I can't wait to get my shoes off when I get home. It's about cleanliness but a big part of it is comfort. If you're at my house though I'm not judging your socks or your toes, in fact, I'm probably not even looking at your feet. That's just what we do in our house and you can do whatever you like in yours. I would certainly be understanding if a "situation" prevented someone from taking their shoes off but an invitation to my house is not an invitation to run amok (ha!) with my general house rules. Just a thought but perhaps people wouldn't have such smelly, gross feet if they took their shoes off and let them breathe once in awhile! Etiquette at Home: Solutions to The Great Shoe Debate |
